View YouTube video in full browser window Internet
This is slightly hard to describe, but I just randomly stumbled across a nifty little hack, for lack of a better word, involving the viewing of YouTube videos. Of course, YouTube natively supports full-screen viewing of videos, but I personally do not like this as I am completely immersed in the video and can no longer see the other activities on my screen (such as new mail, etc).

So I stumbled across this tweak that allows you to watch a YouTube video maximized in its browser window. Check out the pic in my blog post if my description doesn't make sense.

To do this, paste this code into your browser:
http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxxxxxxx&hl=en&fs=1&
Now go back to the desired YouTube video in its normal view, and copy the last 11 alphanumeric string in the URL box on the right side, or in the actual URL you see in the address bar of your browser. This random string is the identifier for that specific video. Now paste that random string in place of the xxxxxxxxxxx in the code above, hit Enter, and you're good to go!

So, for example, if you want to watch a video with this URL ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6SCc6A6Kck ... the URL to go to is http://www.youtube.com/v/S6SCc6A6Kck&hl=en&fs=1&.

Great hint. I just played around with it, and the URL you need is a even simpler -- you can leave of the '&hl=en' and the trailing '&':

http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxxxxxxx&fs=1

Replacing the 'x's with the YouTube video number as described in the hint.

another method (without all the copying, pasting and remembering)

When browsing YouTube recently, I've noticed an arrow-icon widget at the top-right of videos. This maximizes the video in a new window. When doing so, the url of the window is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=[whatever]&[other parameters]

And normally, the url is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=[whatever]&[other parameters]

So, just replace the string "watch" with "watch_popup" in the URL.

Maybe somebody nice around here will whip us up a bookmarklet?

Why would anyone want to watch YouTube in full-screen mode? The quality of most videos is bad enough even at 640x480. Can't even imagine how bad most YouTube videos would look if they were blown up to full-screen size. Whatever.

I don't know why anyone would want to watch YouTube in full-screen mode either but that isn't what this hint is about anyway.

full browser window != full screen

By switching to full window mode using this hint or the arrow icon mentioned by the other poster, you can more easily resize the video to whatever size you want because no matter what size the window is resized to, the video resizes to fill it to the largest possible size that maintains the aspect ratio.

One example is making the window smaller. The standard view adds scrollbars, the video stays the same size, and you can't see the full image at once. With this hint, the video shrinks with the window so nothing is cut off and you can fit more videos on the screen at once, plus everything looks sharper.

They would look larger.

Rob, I appreciate that someone wants to share something nifty they discover (even if it is unnecessary), but what does this hint have to do with Macs or Apple products?

Hey, I submitted this hint knowing it's got nothing to do with macs or apple products, so I filed it under "internet". And plus, macosxhints.com is one of the most receptive, unlike other windows-centric tips sites.

It helps us Mac users do something more with our computers. Also something that some Windoze users, if they are not aware how, would not be able to do.

I definitely appreciate this hint, especially the bookmarklet created above. I will use it on my Mac.

You can also do this by hitting the link to the right of the video's title on the webpage. It's a grey box with an arrow pointing up and to the right, and a tooltip reading "Watch this video in a new window".

Seems like a lot of work when there's a freeware app that already does this for you. http://bit.ly/b6aAc

Try one of the many greasemonkey scripts and you can watch it in quicktime or however you like.
