Change a note's font in Notes on iPhone 3.0 iOS devices
I just upgraded my 3G iPhone to 3.0 yesterday, turned on Notes syncing in iTunes, restarted Mail.app and presto, my Notes are now in Mail.app. Great, but they're displayed in Marker Felt.

I went to one of my notes in Mail.app, selected all the text, brought up the font panel (Command-T) and chose Arial. It gets displayed in Mail.app in Arial, and guess what? When sync'd back to the iPhone, that note is no longer in Marker Felt -- hurray!

[robg adds: You can even edit the note on the iPhone in the newly-chosen font. For those interested, this hint still works in iPhone OS 3.0 to switch the font of a note while still on the iPhone.]

Marker Felt looks wrong inside Mail but then all kind of notes look out of place in Mail. I don't write my shopping list with InDesign or Latex, I write it by hand. Notes on the iPhone acts like a bunch of handwritten notes (similarly to Stickies in Dashboard).
Can you choose the font for SMSs, for Twitter? No, it is text displayed differently depending on where it is viewed. The same should be true for notes, if you want to view your notes inside Mail, they should be displayed in default Mail font.

I guess that Apple choice the Marker Felt font to make the visual interface more efficient: at a glance, you know it's a note because of the distinctive font.

Nevertheless, it's a good hint I'm glad to see, and glad to know a changed font in a note "sticks".

I tried this and it worked but only in the note body. The Notes list on the iPhone and in Mail.app still show up in Marker Felt. Any help fixing that?

There's no fix for that as far as I'm aware.

"I went to one of my notes in Mail.app, selected all the text, brought up the font panel (Command-T) and chose Arial."

You mean you chose HELVETICA, right? Or do you need to be slapped repeatedly with a trout?

By the way, there's also a setting in Mail's preferences for the default font for notes (it's under Fonts & Colors). It's not necessary to manually change the font in every note.

LOL - great post, x2.
You don't need to do anything more than change the preference, and any time you can put "trout" in the hints threads, it's classic.

Just to clarify, changing the default Notes font in Mail doesn't change the default Notes font on the iPhone—new notes created on the iPhone will still be in Marker Felt.

To get around this problem, I "preload" my iPhone with several notes in the font I like by creating several notes with that font in Mail with top lines of "Note A," "Note B," and so on. After a sync, these essentially blank notes with the font I want are sitting on my iPhone, ready to be edited.

It should be noted (sorry) that some fonts don't work well in Notes because their line spacing doesn't match the line spacing in Notes's background graphic. I've shown several examples here.

"there's also a setting in Mail's preferences for the default font for notes"

That was easy. Should have thought of that in the first place! It fixed the list in Mail.app but, unfortunately, the list in the iPhone Notes is still Marker Felt.
