Use a Windows PC Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner on the Mac Scanners
Fujitsu does not list Mac OS X drivers for the ScanSnap S510 on their English language website (maybe because they have a Mac version of the ScanSnap S510, the ScanSnap S510M). They do, however, list the OS X drivers for the ScanSnap S510 on the Japanese language site, but as you may expect, the program is also in Japanese. The directions that follow are to get the ScanSnap S510 working under Mac OS X, in English.
  1. Download the ScanSnap Manager software for the S510M (ScanSnap_V22L11.dmg). After downloading, install the software.
  2. Use Finder to locate the ScanSnap Manager.app file. Control click on it and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then open the Contents » Resources folder.
  3. Copy the English.lproj folder to the desktop.
  4. Open the Applications folder and drag the ScanSnap folder to the trash, then empty the trash.
  5. Now that we have the English Language folder for the ScanSnap Manager software, we can go ahead and install the Japanese Snansnap Manager for the S510 under OS X. Open the Japanese Mac download page, and scroll down until you find the ScanSnap Manager for Mac section. Find the correct OS X version, and download the corresponding ScanSnap_V21L20.dmg file.
  6. Install ScanSnap Manager from the newly-downloaded file from the Japanese site. If you get an error saying that the software cannot be installed, make sure you have uninstalled/trashed the previous S10M version, making sure you have emptied the trash, maybe restart your Mac after those steps.
  7. Once the software is installed, you should be able to use your ScanSnap S10 without problem (except that the ScanSnap Manager program is in Japanese).
  8. Copy the English.Iproj folder from your desktop into the Resources folder for the new install -- follow the directions above for how to get there.
  9. Quit and restart the ScanSnap manager.
That should do it; the program should now run in English.

Awesome! One minor note: Even after restarting, the Japanese version did not want to install.
After a quick Spotlight search I found the culprit:
I had to go to /Library/Receipts to kill the ScanSnap receipt, and all was good in the world of one-tap scanning.

Thanks for that bit of info, that was holding my install up too!

On a more general note - I am really disappointed at fujitsu for trying to monetize on their us customers by making separate mac and pc versions. On top of this, if you lost the CD for some reason you can't download the PC drivers online. You have to email customer support and wait a few hours to get a special web password to get the drivers again. I just wasted 2 hours of my life trying to get this scanner to work on my PC and then finally having to do this hack fix procedure on the mac. I am happier now though since I primarily use mac so the only reason I had a PC in the office even was to scan my docs!

I had no success with these instructions, I don't know why, but I just did. After installing, re-installing, throwing things around and countless google searches - I finally found one set of instructions that worked perfectly for my S510. Here is the link:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=32046&page=7
you will need to scroll down until you find the post by Camngnp223 submitted on 03-09-08. After following those instructions, everything looked great, but then a second window i clicked on was in Japanese. The plugin file under ScanSnap Manager also needs the corresponding English.1proj file copied/pasted.

Does anyone know if the situation has improved at all with the ScanSnap S1500? Where I am the "m" version isn't available for purchase.

Found an answer to my question!

http://www.documentsnap.com/fujitsu-scansnap-s1500-s1500m-are-now-cross-platform/

"I have just confirmed with Fujitsu that yes, rei is right. You will be able to plug the ScanSnap S1500M into a Windows machine and vice versa (as long as you install the correct software). This is tremendous! No more Windows to Mac (or vice versa) workarounds!"

We've gone ahead and made a pre-packaged version for download that works with Mac OS X 10.5.x (other releases not tested). This article is missing the fix for the bundles which stops you from being able to Scan2Folder, or print or Scan2Mail in english. This download includes everything, it is a shame that Fujitsu tried to sell a separate unit with this software. Shame on them!

Just download the Zipped DMG, mount it and drag the ScanSnap folder to your applications... done :)

Enjoy!
