Set a reminder to reply to a text message on the iPhone iOS devices
If you get a text message when you're in an application and don't want to leave that app to respond, but you're worried that you'll forget about the text message when you're done, here's a simple solution...

When the text message arrives, push the lock button to lock the iPhone's screen. Then press it again and unlock. You'll still be in the same app, but the text message dialog will be gone. When you exit the app, you'll see the red "1" counter on your SMS icon, reminding you to respond to the text message.

You don't need to lock the phone to do this. Simply close out the dialog that appears for the SMS when in a different app. That's it.

When you finish with the app you are using, if you look at the Text icon (SMS app) on the springboard, you will see that it has the same red indicator that you have a text message to read.

Nice idea but this hint probably needs removing or at least rewriting. On my iPhone (which is running iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4) the advise doesn't work as locking the phone and then unlocking it simply returns to the application with the new message notification still there, prompting for a response. To me that implies that the behaviour was considered a bug and has been addressed.

And the first comment poster says that simply closing the message will keep the new message count flag on the icon - but that isn't true either.

Maybe this behaviour is not consistent between different OS versions.

My impression is that it depends if the SMS message is short enough to display entirely in the alert. If it isn't, the SMS shows unread, otherwise it's shown read.

@Izzard: eclpmb is correct. If the SMS message is short (displayable in the dialog), then it won't show the count in the SMS app icon. However, if the message doesn't fit in the dialog, then when the dialog is closed, there will be a 1 in the SMS app icon (assuming there wasn't a number in it to start with).

I tested this with two TXT messages I sent myself. One was very short "testing" and the other was very long (the original hint and my first comment).

Every text message I have ever received has been long enough to add to the number in the icon as opposed to all fitting in the dialog that lets you know an SMS has arrived. So I never saw that short messages were not kept "unread".
