Access all Exposť modes on new keyboards Other Hardware
On my new Unibody MacBook, I really enjoy the dedicated Exposť key (F3). The only problem is that I assumed it did only one thing: enter the All Windows mode of Exposť. Through experimentation, however, I have learned that is not the case; the following modifier keys change the behavior of the F3 key:
  • Control-F3: Current application windows mode
  • Command-F3: Show desktop mode
  • Option-F3: Opens the Exposť & Spaces System Preferences panel.
I assume these shortcuts will work on all Macs with a single dedicated Exposť key. As I have been in 12" PowerBook land for five years, I don't know exactly which models this will apply to.

[robg adds: I thought we had this documented here somewhere, but a search on all the obvious, required words comes up empty.]

Access all Exposť modes on new keyboards

The odd thing is that my Preferences for a Mac Mini with an aluminum keyboard that does have the dedicated F3 Exposť key, still shows F9, F10 and F11 for the following. Just like with the first genearations MacBooks:

  • All Windows: F9 (actually requiring fn-F9, but F3 works too)
  • Application Windows: F10 (fn-F10, Ctrl-F3 works too)
  • Desktop: F11 (fn-F11, Cmd-F3 works too)

(I find a keyboard shortcut for the preferences not quite useful, and I actually liked F10 rather than Ctrl-F3 better, but well, Apple needed some remapping to add the Play, Rewind and Forward buttons...)

On the stand alone keyboard it's not a big gain, but on portables you no longer have to hold the function key with your left hand and press F9~11 right. It can now be done with the left hand alone, (and that is a huge improvement for me!)

I suppose it's small potatoes to note, but holding the Shift key with any of the Exposť-related key combinations will still produce the effect in slow motion.

i'm on a new unibody mbp, and the multitouch features are awesome. this is the first apple laptop where i haven't wanted to connect an external mouse immediately. use four fingers to expose all windows or desktop, if you go up or down.

now i can't wait for firefox 3.1 which supports multitouch!!

This completely changes my view of the kbd redesign. I've been frustrated over the decision to limit Expose to a single key (and, I thought, a single window function) since the redesign was introduced. I've also been frustrated when I've used Macs with the new layout that didn't have the custom re-mapping of Expose that I've used at home. Now, I can access the Desktop with ease from any Mac once again! Thanks!

I know what you mean. Would it kill Apple to publish this type of thing? And I'm not talking about buried in Help Viewer somewhere, I mean in documentation that comes with the laptop or keyboard.

Exposť isn't actually mapped to F3, but to the 3rd 'special features' key on the new keyboards. If you press Fn and that key, you get F3. If you flipped the setting in the keyboard preferences, then you have to press Fn to get the special features action.

The exceptions are keys without special features, like F5 and F6 on the new keyboards, where you don't have to press Fn to get the function key. Although I think those are the keyboard backlight brightness on laptops that have that feature.

The "alt" shortcuts also work on for brightness and volume. When combined either the "Displays" or "Sound" preference pane will pop up

Example alt + F10 or F11 or F12 will pop up the "Sound" preference pane

and alt + F1 or F2 will bring up the display preference pane.

pretty convenient for when you might be working with a second display if you ask me.

The Dashboard key(F4) also works, but it performs the same function as the Exposť button.

Thanks for the excellent tip you guys, i would have never try the other keys lol.
