Cursor positioning in the Safari 4 Beta Google search box
Apr 02, '09 07:30:00AM • Contributed by: Anonymous
In Safari 3, you could use the Up Arrow key to get to the front of the Google search field (while entering search terms) if you wanted to add quotation marks, or make other changes. With Safari 4 Beta's new Google Suggestions feature, this editing trick stopped working. However, you can use Command-Up Arrow instead, which will mimic the Safari 3 behavior.

Command-left arrow and right arrow as well; holding the option key also seems to jump to the beginning/end in conjunction with up/down arrows. Option-left/right jumps to the beginning/end of the word.

This is standard behavior throughout OS X. Command left/right will bring you to the beginning/end of a line. Option left/right will jump word by word. Also, Command up/down will bring you to the beginning/end of a document, whereas Option up/down will jump by paragraph. This is also very useful in text editing, since you can use shift-command or shift-option to highlight lines or words.

Or you can use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-E for beginning or end of line, like in emacs / bash / everywhere else

Or rather: like in emacs, or anything compiled against libreadline (or one of its clones) with emacs-like line editing mode enabled.

No, more than that - try it in Safari's address bar, the Spotlight search box, a file save dialog, when renaming a file in Finder, etc... it works pretty much anywhere.

It does indeed work "pretty much everywhere" one place it does not work is Office 2004. I know it is not cocoa, but I wanted to mention it because so many people have it.

Thank you for this! I should have thought to try it, since I know it's standard. Now that I know, I'm actually glad the regular up & down arrows keep their page scrolling function. |
