10.5: Put Smart Folders under Places on the Sidebar Desktop
If you are like me, you have a lot of entries in the Places section of the sidebar in Leopard's Finder. What if you want a Smart Folder that aggregates your favorite/recent places (or provides any Smart Folder functionality), but you don't want to have to scroll down to the Search For section of the sidebar? In other words, you'd like to place your Smart Folders in the Places section of the sidebar.

By default, Apple disables moving Smart Folders to the Places category of the sidebar. So how do you get around this? Easily.

Take any saved search on the sidebar, Control-click on it and select Open Enclosing Folder from the pop-up menu. Then select your search and choose File » Make Alias, and drag the alias to your sidebar. Done!

[robg adds: I think this can be further simplified -- once the enclosing folder is visible, you can drag any of the visible Smart Folders directly to the Places section of the sidebar; no alias is required (at least not on my 10.5.6 machine it's not).]

...and for the beauty of your sidebar: As you might know already, you can change the smart folder icon easily by opening the information windows of the smart folder and a file you like the icon of, klicking on the icon in the upper left corner, cmd+C, klicking on the smart folder icon, cmd+V. That way my "All Excel sheets" smart folder is represented by the Office:Mac 2008 XLSX-Icon. Let's see how long THIS is gonna be beautiful! :-)))

This hint basically states that you can drag Finder items into the Finder sidebar. It's true, you can do that.

this is not the sig you`re looking for.

This hint is helpful to some people. Are you concerned that this hint is too trivial? Take a good look at your sig file before you point your finger at someone else.

I don't have 10.5, so further to Rob's and "unforseen:X11"'s comments, I'd be interested to know if dragging the smart folder's titlebar icon to the sidebar works, too.

Excellent question -- seed for a great hint almost!

Yes, it does. And it clones the smart folder to the PLACES section, leaving the original undisturbed under SEARCH FOR.
