Fix locked Safari 4 Beta / SafariStand windows Web Browsers
Very often I deal with Safari 4 Beta's windows crashing. Usually it is caused by typing outside a text box, after recently using one. When the problem occurs, the window locks up, and appears to select all of the content (a-la Command-A), and it's sometimes accompanied by a CPU spike as well. This is very irritating indeed. (Note that I have SafariStand installed, which might be the source of the problem, but I'm not sure.)

Solution: Control-click on Safari 4 Beta's Dock icon, and select New Window from the contextual menu. A new window should open, and all of the actions you took (post-freeze) will execute rapidly in this window. You may then close that window and return to the original, which will be working again.

Once frozen, I do not think Command-N will work, so you really have to use the Dock. Also, once one tab has frozen, clicking into any other currently-open tab will cause it to freeze as well. It would be nice to have a script for this, but despite it being very simple, I am far too lazy to write one.

I was able to not have my safari window locked by unchecking "Automate find function" in safari stands "Key action" pref page.

fwiw, i've found safari 4 beta to be remarkably stable -- not one crash or freeze -- and i've used it exclusively, since the day it was released.

i do not use safaristand, but i *do* use glims. so, perhaps safaristand is contributing to your issues.

There's something systemically wrong when an innocent high level GUI event causes such deep rooted disasters. I'm smelling the same type of chancy coding Microsoft did with their IE where the same type of thing happened. The reason the IE coders did what they did - which is by definition "bad engineering" - is they wanted to win the speed war with Netscape. Apple are always trying to sell Safari on its speed. One has to wonder if they're doing the same thing.

It's a SafariStand issue, not a Safari issue. I had the same problem and did the same thing other the commenters here did.

Since 'Stand is a plugin that isn't really supposed to work the way it works, it's not really an Apple coding issue and certainly nothing like what Microsoft did with IE.

For me, Safari 4 is stable except for one site (even with the plugins I have) and that's not bad considering it is beta software.

Sometimes when you run out into the field of new tech (ie: using a beta version), you stumble a bit.

SafariStand is the problem. Turn off "Automates the Find Function" under Key Actions or install the latest version of SafariStand which has Key Actions turned off until a workaround is found.

This is indeed just an issue with an outdated Safaristand.
Simply updating fixes this.

Instead this is basically a pointer to the new version.

(My bad for not checking)

I use Safari 4 with SafariStand, and I've never seen this problem.

If the problem is fixed by updating, this workaround is unnecessary and should be removed.
