10.5: Recover auto-saved Word files with Time Machine Apps
This is an obvious hint, but it saved me: If you accidently quit Word without saving, Word will automatically remove the corresponding AutoRecovery file. However, if your machine is being backed up with Time Machine, you can go to the ~/Documents » Microsoft User Data » Office 2008 AutoRecovery folder, and then use Time Machine to recover the AutoRecovery file.

Dang! That's one of those hints that make you slap your forehead and call yourself stupid for not coming up with it yourself.

I thought every Mac app in the universe would ask if you want to save the file before quitting when you try to quit without saving. Leave it to Microsoft. Always innovating!

Word does ask you if you want to save. I'm guessing the OP is describing a situation where one quits Word without saving a document first and then also accidentally clicks on Don't Save in the dialog box that Word pops up.

Haha I've done that many times... quit without thinking then when the box pops up think "I know what I'm doing!" and click Don't Save. This is a neat little life saver... an actual use for having hourly backups!

your post saved me thanks, however I did not use time machine (since I haven't set it up yet), just searched for storage location of recovery files (which your post helped me find by letting me know what the folder is called) and opened the recovered file that had appropriate time stamp.

note that the actual location of the file (when not using time machine) was user/documents/microsoft user data/office 2008 autorecovery
