10.5: Change apps with a four-finger swipe and tap System 10.5
The multi-touch features on my MacBook Air are great. Although, I mostly switch apps with keystrokes (Command-Tab) and/or Quicksilver, I wanted to make better use of multitouch when I could. You can activate app switching with a four-finger left/right swipe, but the navigation of picking an app and then making it active can happen in a few ways.

You can pick an app by either moving the pointer with a single finger to hover over the app of choice, or by sliding two fingers (left/right or up/down) to move the activation selector over the available apps.

You can select an app, though, apparently only by clicking the mouse button. This is what I found annoying. I hoped I'd be able to tap the track pad to activate the selected app. After some experimentation, I found out you can activate an app with a single four-finger tap, but not with a one-, two-, or three-finger tap.

Happy swipe-swipe-tapping!

I disagree. I select apps with a simple one-finger tap.

I also use 4 fingers to swap and then 1 finger to tap and select the app I want.

The tip is correct though. i just noticed that a single tap works for me because I usually have the mouse pointer in the middle of the screen while I'm swapping apps. If the pointer is not on top of the app you want to switch to, then a single tap does not work.

Using a 4 fingers tap as the tip suggests really works and it's completely independent of where the mouse pointer is.

Sorry for my rushed comment before. The tip is great and really works.

Cool. That makes this feature somewhat usable.

For the record, I believe the author is talking about using this feature when you *don't* have tap-to-click turned on (otherwise yes, obviously you'd be able to tap with one finger). Personally, I leave that off, because it interferes with a lot of what I do -- particularly graphics stuff.

Four-finger swipe and one-finger tap works for me also.

I'm sorry, but a *four* finger gesture? That's a bit ridiculous.

I don't even know if I can get all four of my big fingers on the trackpad at once!

I'm hoping there's more in store for multi-touch than multi-finger gestures. Two fingers max in any gesture, I think.

I constantly use my 4 finger gestures (well, the exposť & show desktop) and i've even got MultiClutch set up to change spaces with 3 finger swipes. its something that you have to try and use to really become used to (read: addicted to)

I thought >2 finger gestures were gimmicky at first too, but after nearly a year of 3-finger paging thru photos and PDFs, it has become so second nature that I miss it a lot on other laptops. I love it.

I just enabled the 4 finger gesture on my Penryn Classic. 4 finger exposť is very handy too. I find I'm using it a lot more now, especially Show Desktop. It's neat being able to just "swipe the windows away" to clear the screen.

Agreed .. In theory. But I've never used >2 finger gestures and since I only have a MacBook Core Duo I believe 2 is the max available to me. But as others state, once you use the other gestures, I have no doubt the you'd become addicted. (Although Cmd-Tab still sounds more convenient to me right now - maybe that's just because I'm still so used to it from windows.)

Anyway, before I used them, the two-finger gestures (scrolling and right/ctrl-clicking) didn't sound like a big deal, but now using my old iBook or any laptop that doesn't support these gestures is even more annoying than using a mouse without a scroll wheel!
