Add a new face in iPhoto '09 with corner-based resize Apps
On adding a missing face to a picture in iPhoto the default behavior of the face box when resizing is a centered resizing, which is far from easy to get custom to. If you press the Option key when resizing, you get the more common from-corner approach.

[robg adds: I couldn't find this in the list of iPhoto '09 keyboard shortcuts. I'd check to see if this is in the manual, but ... iLife '09 doesn't seem to have manuals available of any sort, just video tutorials. I'm assuming this trick is probably covered in one of the videos, but I'm not going to sit through one or more just to find out.]

In many apps that are normally corner-anchored for things like this, you can use Option to temporarily center-anchor them (the reverse of the hint, essentially).

Wonderful hint. Sadly it's 2 days too late for me. I was spending my whole sunday afternoon going through my iPhoto library identifying people and adding faces.
I found adding new faces to a picture being the most annoying task. I guess this hint would have sped this up by a factor of two ...

I agree completely. That's my problem with video tutorials or training. Others might prefer them, but I find text more efficient in so many ways. IMO, video training can only very seldom replace training based on text or on synchronous teaching situations (where you can ask the teacher questions, during the instruction, while questions are fresh in mind).

I just verified this hint and it works as written.

I would suspect that there is a default setting that would allow the reversal of this so that Option used the center adjust and no Option uses normal box adjustments. Most of Apple's apps seems to have these "defaults" settings.

Add a new face in iPhoto '09 with corner-based resize

Thankyou thankyou thankyou!

The resize-from-center thing has been driving me nuts; I've probably added 2000-3000 face boxes so far.

Now if there were only a keyboard way to enter and exit Name mode. With my wide iPhoto window, the Name button is waaaay over to the left, and the Done button (to exit Name mode) is waaaay over to the right. Quite a pain to switch back and forth when occasionally needing to delete a photo while in the midst of a naming run (wish Delete worked here). Can't find a Shortcut for this in the iPhoto docs, nor a menu item (which would be easy).

Anyone have any ideas?

Also would be nice if Keyword shortcuts worked in the Name mode when the Keyword palette is displayed, but it seems I have to click the Keyword palette buttons, no keystrokes allowed.

iPhoto is VERY modal in many places.

I can't help you with a key for the Name button, but you can hit Escape instead of clicking the Done button.

Once in the faces interface I found that the Enter key -usually- opens the name field for editing and then Return usually closes it to allow cursor keys to proceed to next image.

I say usually because every so often same key press operates the 'Done' and the Return opens the image in my default helper app.

I have a new cut down keyboard and my 'enter' is function - return.

I'd love more keyboard based ways of doing this stuff or indeed copy pasting identities!

straight after posting this I found tab enters an un named face filed and then moves to next. Now that is the most likely - and I thought I'd tried that before without joy - but its working now.

I sat through them, watching like a hawk for resize tricks, no joy.

Don't waste your time trying to resize the box. It wont assist Faces' ability to recognize the person in other images. Faces doesn't learn from "unrecognized faces".
Just drag it somewhere close to the person, so the tag will show up on the person and drop. Resizing to the precise dimension of the face wont do anything but waste your time
