Use a Front Row plug-in to shut down a Mac Apps
I bought a Mac Mini to use as a media center. Great, except I found an important feature lacking: you need a keyboard to shut it down (unless you buy Remote Buddy, which for me, was no solution for several reasons). I adapted the frontpython code a bit and created an icon. Et voila: a Shut Down plug-in for Front Row.

You can download it freely from; if you like it, please leave a message at the website.

[robg adds: I've seen a number of posts on various sites about how to shut down from Front Row without a keyboard attached. I've mirrored the current version of the file [6.2MB download] here on macosxhints for easier downloading. If you're reading this hint sometime after its posting date, however, you may want to use the linked site, as there may be updates there that won't be reflected here. I haven't tested this one.]

A FrontRow plugin for sleeping the Mac would be nice!

To sleep the mac mini, just press and hold the play/pause button on the remote for 2 seconds (just like an ipod)

You can just send your mac to sleep with the Apple remote right? Why the need for a plugin?

General question

This is very interesting. I've been concidering replacing my Apple TV with a Mac Mini as a media server, but think I'd lose too much that the Apple TV can do, especially if I wanted to do it all through Front Row. Are there ways to do these things using Front Row:

Rent and buy iTunes movies?

Watch movies in HD?

Browse the iTunes store and buy music?

Sync photos from folders rather than from iPhoto?

See MobileMe or Flicka albums?

Send sound to Airport Express?

It would be great if Front Row was simply Apple TV on a Mac, but I think it's way behind?

Obviously with a keyboard so much more becomes possible, and then the Mac Mini really comes into it's own, so I think Front Row is what holds it back?
