An odd fix for uneditable iCal entries Apps
I recently had a problem where I was unable to edit the events on my iCal calendars -- neither double-clicking the entry or using Command-E worked. After quitting iCal, I removed its icon from the Dock, then dragged it back to the Dock and relaunched iCal. All was OK after that.

[robg adds: This hint came from anonymous without an email address, so I'm unable to get any additional details, such as whether the user had tried simply quitting and relaunching iCal prior to this Dock-drag solution. It doesn't make any sense to me that this solution worked, so I'm curious if anyone else out there has run into the same problem and had success with this solution -- if so, then it's something worth including in the troubleshooting bag of tricks.]

I guess there is potential that the dock extra could interfere with the application, but it does seem odd.

For Tiger maybe, but in Leopard, the iCal icon date feature has nothing to do with the Dock.

What about the idea that he might have had a second copy of iCal floating around -- one that had been moved, and therefore not updated with the last update?

I've had the same issue with iCal from time to time and found that simply stopping and restarting iCal clears the problem. When it happens, I haven't found a way to get the event info dialog to display. Once I restart iCal, all is good again.

I've not found it necessary to do the steps with the Dock that the initial submitter reported.

Running 10.5.6 now, seen the problem on other 10.5.x levels as well.

I second that. Restarting iCal is sufficient to get out of this funny iCal state.

Do you use Spaces?
I find that when I can not see the event info window, if I switch spaces, it will be in one of my other spaces. This happens even though I have iCal set to display in all my spaces. Strange, eh!

Spaces is the culprit

Ahha! I have used Spaces only occasionally so far, and this iCal malfunction at possibly the same times. I'll keep an eye out for this.

I also remember a problem one day with a document opening in Preview in an unseen Space. Took me a while, but eventually I figured out what was happening.

I had this strange issue with iCal. Restart the app did it for me but it happened a few times already.

I had other strange issues as well; some running applications that did not show up in the app switcher (CMD+TAB) nor in the Dock (or didn't had the "blue dot" if they were already stacked in my Dock).

Maybe something up with Spaces and 10.5.6...

I've had the same problem (iCal not popping up an info or edit window for an item) and the same minimal fix (stopping and restarting iCal) works for me, but I have not had enough opportunity to see what else I can find out, yet.

For me, though, I do not use Spaces in any form, it's completely disabled, so the root cause is probably not related to that at all (or if it is, oy vey!).
