Set DVD Player region code without admin password Apps
To set the region code in DV Player, you need to provide an administrative password. If you work with a large collection of Macs in a school or business, this can be a pain if your users are running as non-admin users (as they probably are).

We got fed up with this real quick where I work, so I wrote a little app called DVD Region Code Unlock that you can run to allow (on the first time the user tries to play a DVD) to set the region code. Using this simple app on the systems allows the user to set the region code once. (After the initial time, an admin password will be required to re-set the region code.)

[robg adds: I haven't tested this app.]

Hah, I was just thinking about this issue today. Pushing this out over ARD should be great!

Not to seem picky, but you have a confusing typo on your website:

"The initial install of this program will not allow a user to set the region code only once, but after it has been set, it will again require the admin password to set it again."

I don't think that "not" is supposed to be in there.

I was just working on this too. I have been hunting down a DVD just so I could set the region code. Sending this through ARD would be a great time saver.

in the interest of full disclosure, i would be interested in knowing by what mechanism the app is able to do this without the admin password.

Search for system.device.dvd.setregion.initial in http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2095.html and now take a look at the preflight script in the package.

This software does not install anything, it just modifies the /etc/authorization file. I actually put more documentation on my website to explain it better.

I have more goodies coming as well!

maybe password protection comes into play when you try to commit the change using the UI. if this app changes it "behind the scenes" you could skip the pwd requirement.

that said, I wonder if changes via this app still increments the counter (you're only allowed to change the region 5 times, right?)
