Quit frozen iPhone apps with Home button double-tap iOS devices
I have used this many times when applications freeze, and neither the Home button nor the Lock button have any effect.

If this happens, try double-tapping the Home button to invoke the Home button shortcut. My double-tap shortcut is for the iPod, but this also works with Phone favorites. By starting the Phone app, or the iPod app, the iPhone kills the hung application.

Or you can just press and hold the Home button for 5 seconds, which "force quits" the application.

Yup, the 5-second Home button has never failed to work for me, and guarantees that the hung application is closed completely.

This has worked for me when the force quit option didn't work. I have found that when the force quit option might work, locking the phone works too.

Plus, a double tap is a bit faster then 5 seconds of holding. Just another tool in the chest.

If you accidentally double tap you might lose data because the preferences file (NSUserDictionary) might not be written to disk unless the developer explicitly syncs it (unlikely). I think it is better of leaving it as the default hold home 5 secs.
