Resolve problems with Office 2008 update installation Apps
I've had a hard time updating Office 2008, getting an error that states "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.x on this volume. The version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." Even a clean reinstall from the source Office disk did not fix this issue. After several back-and-forths with Microsoft, the following solution worked.
  1. Run the Remove Office app, which is located in /Applications » Microsoft Office 2008 » Additional Tools.
  2. Delete the following files and folders:
    • /Users/(me)/Library/Preferences/(all files that start com.microsoft)
    • /Users/(me)/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    • /Users/(me)/Library/Application Support/Microsoft
    • /Users/(me)/Microsoft User Data
    • /Users/(me)/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    • /Users/(me)/Documents/Office Projects
    • /Library/Receipts/(all files that begin with Office 2008)
  3. Reinstall from the Office source disk and update.
A word of caution: back up your personalized settings before erasing the Office files. If you use Entourage for your email, back up your Entourage data in your user's Documents » Microsoft User Data » Office 2008 Identities » Main Identity folder by copying it to the desktop. If you have created templates, back those up by copying them to the desktop from your user's Library » Application Support » Microsoft » Office » User Templates folder.

There shouldn't be a /Users/(me)/Microsoft User Data.

/Users/(me)/Documents/Microsoft User Data is the correct location (as indicated in the original post). The only way one sees /Users/(me)/Microsoft User Data is if one has accidentally moved the MUD folder. In that case, Office will create a new MUD folder in the Documents folder.

By the way, if one is using Entourage (X, 2004, 2008), the MUD folder contains the Enoutage database so, obviously, you'd better back it up.

Secondly, if anyone is still using Entourage X, you should be aware that it has a 1.99GB limit in file size. Exceed 2GB and kiss your database goodbye.

I was getting the same error. When I downloaded and ran the update from the MicroSoft website it worked fine.

I had this same issue and documented the fix on my blog. Bottom line is you have to apply the correct patches in order or it won't work.

The reason this happens is because the update installer sees that there is a receipt in the receipt folder claiming that the update has already been installed. It's very common if you reinstall Office from the CD it will put an older version on than what you previous had, then you go to run the updates again and it thinks it does not need it because the receipt folder shows the history of the previous updates. In my experience all you have to do is remove all the "Office2008" receipts in the receipt folder before you reinstall from the CD and all will be well.

I was having a similar problem when I had several updates in a row come through. I had a much simpler solution - I repaired permissions on the startup drive and then rebooted. That allowed me to install the next update without any problem.

I've seen this problem on several Macs. Reinstalling Office 2008 does work, but it is insane of Microsoft to suggest that this is an acceptable solution. The next time there's a new update, the problem recurs all over again. Another certified piece of crap from Microsoft!

Thanks to those who suggested simpler fixes. If they work, updating Office 2008 will definitely be a little less painful.

I had the same problem. It was caused by removing the unnecessary additional languages that are installed. I would use an application to remove the languages and then the next time an update was released I could not update. To fix I would do a total uninstall through a third party uninstall app that would remove everything, including the pref files and app support files. Then after a clean install with all the languages, the updates would be applied with no problem.
