Disable Skype's auto-changing of microphone volume Apps
Skype always irritated me with its automatic microphone volume changes. The Windows version has the ability to disable this option in the preferences pane, but the Mac version does not. Today, I spent some time trying to solve this problem. After some searching on net, I found a solution for the Windows version which also works on the Mac.

Quit Skype and open the folloving file with TextEdit: ~/Library » Application Support » Skype » shared.xml. At the end of the document, you'll see this section:
<VoiceEng>
  <MicVolume>77</MicVolume>
</VoiceEng>
Simply change this section to look like this (adding one new line):
<VoiceEng>
  <AGC>0</AGC>
  <MicVolume>100</MicVolume>
</VoiceEng>
AGC means Automatic Gain Control, and setting it to 0 disables this feature. Set it to 1 if you want to enable it again. The MicVolume can range from 0 (mute) to 255 (full volume). Save the file and start Skype.

Note: I'm using Tiger and Skype 2.6.0. I have no experience with other OS X and/or Skype versions, but I hope this hint will help some frustrated Skype users.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this one.]

Thank you, that's been bugging me.

Note I removed the MicVolume altogether and inserted the AGC. From testing this causes Skype to use whatever input volume has been set.

Works well!

This hint works exactly as described. The awesomeness that is this hint cannot be overstated. Skype has seriously annoyed me to no end because of this so-called "feature". I had even tried manually tweaking a different setting in the XML, based on a PC user's file, to no avail. I'm glad this one worked!

Make sure you're looking in the Library folder in your home directory (note the ~ in the hint above which means your home directory).

Thanks for all of the help, I was able to get into the file, mine looks like this <VoiceEng>
<MicBoost>
<Built-in.20Line.20Input>0</Built-in.20Line.20Input>
<Samson.20C01U.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20>0</Samson.20C01U.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20>
</MicBoost>
<MicVolume>
<Built-in.20Line.20Input>49</Built-in.20Line.20Input>
<Samson.20C01U.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20>62</Samson.20C01U.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20.20>
</MicVolume>
<SpeakerVolume>97</SpeakerVolume>
</VoiceEng>
</Lib>
</config>
Can someone please let me know what I change? Thanks, it has taken me a while to get back into this page on Max OS X hints, but I am looking forward to having this problem resolved. Thanks again.

I had something like that with mine too (MacPro Leopard, latest version) and I simply deleted the "extra" lines (between the <VoiceEng> and the </VoiceEng>) and pasted in the lines suggested in the first post.

Yes mine looked like yours with the "subroutines" of ...
<MicBoost>
<Built-in.20Line.20Input>0</Built-in.20Line.20Input>
[crap here]
</MicBoost>
<MicVolume>
<Built-in.20Line.20Input>49</Built-in.20Line.20Input>
[crap here]
</MicVolume>
<SpeakerVolume>97</SpeakerVolume>

... all between the <VoiceEng> and the </VoiceEng> loops. No problems when I deleted it. My Mac"pro" doesn't have built in mike/camera like my MacBook pro but it does have the grunt I need when I need it :)

PS. Anyone in Australia want an online video editor so I can put my "grunt" to good use?! ;)

Whatever, whenever...

Just want to confirm that removing all the extra lines and just putting

<VoiceEng>
<AGC>0</AGC>
<MicVolume>100</MicVolume>
</VoiceEng>

works with Skype 5.1.0.914 too.

Thanks for the hint!
