10.5: Sync Gmail Calendars with iCal Internet
Google has opened up their calendar system so that you can have real two-way sync of your online Gmail calendars with iCal. You can set up multiple calendars with what appears to be full iCal functionality, and have them "push" changes to Google. You can read their detailed instructions for help getting things going. (You'll then need to click the Enable Google Calendar in Apple's iCal link on that page.)

With these new abilities, the workarounds mentioned in this hint and comments are no longer necessary.

I'm confused. Has anything changed since July when this was first noted ( http://tinyurl.com/5o8eg7 ) ? For instance, is it now possible to synch multiple iCal calendars with multiple google calendars?

I don't think so. There was another post just last month that seems to address problems with Google's CalDAV:

This appears to be exactly the same as the way I set mine up in July. So I'd say no, no changes. Still can't sync these google ical calendars with the iPhone. :sigh:

This has been available for some time now, although it may not have been posted on macosxhints before.

Note that there are several known bugs still outstanding with Google's iCal integration:

Event reminders/alarms don't sync
Event reminders/alarms don't currently sync between Google Calendar and Apple's iCal. Event reminders will only function according to the calendar settings of the application in which they were originally created.

Notification emails/SMS not sent
When an event is created or modified in iCal, Google Calendar email and SMS notifications are not distributed at this time.

Apple iCal errors when changing the calendar name/color
You may see an error in iCal when changing the name or color of a calendar. Although the calendar name will revert back to the original name upon refresh, the color change will be saved.

Unable to create Apple iCal To Dos for Google Calendar
This feature (iCal File > New To do) will either be unavailable for selection or you'll receive an error when selected.

Unable to create new iCal calendars for Google Calendar
When trying to create a new (secondary) Google Calendar in iCal, you'll receive an error message. Even though a calendar may appear, it will disappear after restarting iCal.

Google Apps: Room scheduler is not supported
It's not possible to browse room availability or reserve conference rooms from within iCal. This feature is not supported by CalDAV.

Google Calendar events don't appear in iCal
For a small percentage of Google Calendars, a certain iCal bug will prevent your events from appearing inside the iCal application. We've notified Apple of the issue, and hope that they'll fix it soon.

Sesquipedalian, thanks so much for that list of bugs! You saved me the time of trying Google Calendar with iCal, and I appreciate that. Many of those bugs are complete show-stoppers -- a calendar app is absolutely useless to me without custom reminders, for example.

I do appreciate the original hint and the time " chris_on_hints " took to share it with us.

I broke down and bought BusySync and I've been very happy. Gives me easy syncing with Google Calendar, iCal, and iPhone. And Google Calendar for iphone finally allows you to add items with all the details (beyond quick add) to your google calendar - I rarely even use the iphone calendar app anymore (it won't even allow you to click an address in the location area of an appointment to get a map - crippled crap compared to gCal).

BusySync works with Tiger (10.4) too.

I hadn't seen the original post about it, so I just tried it for the first time. It seems to work with iCal, at least for my basic needs (i.e. publishing information about recurring events- Linux user group meetings, ham radio nets, etc.) but Google's instructions about how to make it work with Sunbird (Mozilla's stand-alone calendaring program) don't seem to work. Sunbird v0.8 tries to connect but comes back with an error message, and this morning after auto-updating to v0.9 it still doesn't want to connect, only now it doesn't show an error message- just a little yellow triangle with a "!" in it.

Is this affecting anybody else, or am I the only person here who uses Sunbird at all? (I need to at least be familiar with it in order to support two of my clients, one of whom has already stated that their next laptop will be a Mac...)

One cannot link existing iCal calendars to existing or newly created Google calendars, is that correct?
I can get one Google calendar to sync, and this creates a new iCal calendar, but I cannot get more than one. Others are syncing multiple, is that right?

The method allows you to pull a google calendar into iCal and use it there - any existing iCal calendars are kept separate. You can drag-and-drop existing events into the new calendars, but this is obviously only ok for small numbers of events.

Pulling in more than one google calendar is easily done - the instructions are at the bottom of the linked page in the hint above and involve copying the ical account email (which is really really long) from the gmail account settings web page and pasting that into the iCal account setup box. I have 3 set up this way, all shared with my wife in the same way. No problems so far - I dont use complex reminders etc mentioned in the "known bugs" above.

Does anybody know if there's a way to add Google's weather calendar to iCal? The calendar's ID is p#weather@group.v.calendar.google.com.

I tried following the instructions for adding secondary calendars on google's site, but it didn't work. I tried replacing the p# in p#weather with my zip code, as well as just replacing the # symbol with my zip code (i.e. 12345weather or p12345weather), but neither one worked.

I think getting that to work in iCal would be really useful - if it's possible. Any ideas?
