Print to an HP Laserjet 6L via a parallel-to-USB adapter Printers
I have tried adding an HP LaserJet 6L printer via Printer Setup Utility many times, and I always got the USB device to show under the default browser, but I could not add the printer. So I went to More Printers (holding down the Option key), clicked Advanced, and tried selecting USB Printer. This brought up usb://, but I could not find address using System Profiler or USB Prober.

Anyway, my grandson comes in, and asks "what's that Unknown button right at the bottom of the Advanced panel?" So I click it, and it comes up with a URL: usb://Unknown/Unknown?serial=0. I tried this, using the Gutenprint HP 6L driver -- and it works perfectly, even waking the printer if necessary.

This works with OS X 10.4.11; hope it helps others -- I googled for help on this, but didn't find anything on the subject.

Print to an HP Laserjet 6L via a parallel-to-USB cable

Perhaps some clarification of terms is in order. You can print to HP printers with a generic USB to Parallel cable. I discovered this worked with my old HP 5MP, which is a PostScript printer. My fancy EtherJet device died (after 10 years) and I had no way to set up the old LocalTalk wiring on my Mac, in desperation I tried using an old generic USB cable from an old Epson inkjet. And it worked instantly, it was plug-n-play. I didn't even have to change drivers, the old 5MP driver recognized the device on its own.

Do you guys know if that happens to work with a Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS, too?
And maby even -- here comes wishful thinking -- with the USB Port of a Airport Express?

The 16/600 has an ethernet port - just plug that puppy into the network and you're good to go.

Anyone got a solution on 10.5?
Authored by: Diggory on Oct 06, '08 08:13:28AM

I have a USB-Parallel cable and an HP Laserjet 5L.

I used to be able to print with it under 10.4 using a similar technique, but in 10.5 the 'Add Printer' window has changed, and you can't use this technique.

Anyone know a way of doing it under 10.5?

can you add it using CUPS? In Safari http://127.0.0.1:631

I'm using an HP LaserJet 6L with Leopard, using the same driver as the original post.

Rycardo

Hi,
maybe youshould go to "Gutenprint for Mac OS" <http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php>; and install it.
Also, - if existing- a problem using your USB/Parallel converter could be fixed by downloading a new kext (within the read-me file, the link for the needed kext file is written in there.)

I am using an HP LJ 3p without problem under 10.5.5 with Gutenprint

To get my HP Laserjet 6L working via parallel to USB cable in either 10.4 or 10.5 I had to also install usbtb (http://buymelunch.org/printing/usbtb/). That CUPS backend, along with the Gutenprint driver, allow perfect use of my Laserjet 6L!
