Import CDs without adding track numbers in iTunes 8 Apps
In addition to the other preference settings dropped in iTunes 8, the option for naming tracks on import without adding the track number to the front of the filename is missing; luckily, the preference is only hidden. If you find those track numbers annoying as I do, just quit iTunes, open Terminal, and enter this command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes create-filenames-with-tracknumber -bool FALSE
On relaunching iTunes, you will find that track numbers are no longer added to filenames on import.

[robg adds: Other removed-but-settable iTunes 8 options include disabling the Genre column in the iTunes browser, enabling automatic play during import, and disabling the iTunes Store arrow links.]

Great tip, but iTunes 8 has already added track and disk numbers to every song in my library! I'm furious about this.

I love Apple products, but I'm really starting to dread updates, because lately they quietly change things "under the hood," for no apparent reason -- features that many of us rely upon. I have 10,000 songs that were organized the way I want them. Now, Apple's not only removed the preference to disable track-numbering, they gone and numbered my 10,000 tracks without my permission. WTF?!!

What's the big deal? What does it change?

Why didn't you just copy the files back from your backup, and go back to iTunes 7?

You have asked iTunes to rename and move files if you've checked the option to "keep iTunes Music Folder organized".

If you're depending on files being in a particular place with a particular name, then tell it you want to manage files manually, and it will happily honor whatever naming and folder structure you desire.

Amen. I have the same issue, with thousands of missing songs! I share my mp3 collection on a network and use different iTunes libraries to point to them, and one consolidate function destroys the rest.

Not impressed with the update to 8 at all.

Wow, well there's one thing I learned from all these hints about iTunes 8: don't install it!! I'm lucky I only run software update occasionally. What is wrong with apple? I'm really not impressed with any of their software since about 10.4 or so.

There's a discussion about this at Ars (amongst many other anguished users on forums) which includes how to revert tracks which have been renumbered:

Another feature removed from iTunes 8 is the "Pause" in the Dock contextual menu that includes "Play" "Next" and "Previous"

This was very handy for pausing a radio stream to briefly listen to a QT file or YouTube video.

Anyone have any legitimate idea why this would be removed?

robg: your editorial comments have the wrong link back to the "disable genre in browse view" hint.
