Scrub video playback in VLC media player Apps
I don't know whether its a new feature or old, but you can scrub through videos in the latest version of the VLC media player by double finger scrolling (in the left or right direction) on the trackpad of newer Mac laptops.

[robg adds: This is definitely new in 0.9.2; I have both it and 0.8.6, and there's no scrubbing via scroll in 0.8.6. You can also scrub with a Mighty Mouse, and with any mouse capable of horizontal scrolling -- which should be any mouse with a scroll wheel. You just need to hold Shift while using the scroll wheel to scroll horizontally while using such rodents.]

Too bad those of us without a laptop [and trackpad] can't scrub though videos like in Quicktime or any other video player to mention it_ You'd think that would be a basic "standard feature" for VLC_

None the less glad to know there's a new version out_ Pulled down 0.8.6i for stability fixes a couple of weeks ago_

Or people with mighty mouse or any other side scroll enabled mouse. They aren't that odd to own, especially if you're on a mac that isn't terribly old...

Or as noted in my comment on the hint, basically any mouse with a scroll wheel and the use of the Shift key -- which tells OS X to scroll sideways.

Slow playback on G4
Authored by: SuperCrisp on Sep 25, '08 11:44:57AM

Since reliability was mentioned, G4 users may want to drop back to 0.8.6i until 0.9.3 comes out. They forgot to enable Altivec optimizations on the latest build of 0.9.2. It took me awhile to figure out that this was why VLC was suddenly stuttering on my old iBook, so I thought I'd offer a heads-up here.

Great hint. VLC's OS X interface still has a ways to go before it is as good as Nice Player though. Good to see that now left and right arrows work for skipping.

When VLC 0.9.x actually works properly, that will be a nice feature. I found a large number of my videos would no longer seek properly, and many had playback issues, after "upgrading" to 0.9.2. Reverting to 0.8.6i solved all of the problems introduced by the new version. Whatever they did, 0.9.2 is one step forward, five steps back.
