Disable iTunes store arrow links in iTunes 8 Apps
In iTunes 7, there was a preference to disable the links to the iTunes Store -- these are the small arrows that appear when you select a song in your library. In iTunes 8, however, that preference is gone. A bit of digging in the iTunes' binary found the solution, thankfully.

If you'd like to disable the iTunes Store link arrows, quit iTunes, open Terminal, and run this command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE
Relaunch iTunes, and voila, no more arrows! To reverse this behavior, you can repeat the above command (quit iTunes first), but replace FALSE with TRUE. (Or, if you prefer, you can completely delete the added preference with defaults delete com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links).

I'm sure this would have been submitted by someone at some point, but the arrows annoyed me enough to go digging for a solution -- and thanks to Kirk McElhearn for his help in finding and testing the fix!

hey rob,
those arrows are really ugly and useless, i wonder why Apple removed the option for disabling em. anyway, there is a way to run this command on windows tho? i have my gargantuan library inside itunes for windows vista and id like to test itunes 8 on it, but i dont really want to see those ugly arrows. Any hint? thx -eldino

From this older hint, it seems the prefs on Windows are stored as a long hex string -- so figuring out what to change may be something of a challenge.

Sorry;

Windows Preference File
Authored by: dakvid on Sep 15, '08 08:13:11PM

From this article it appears that the Windows preference file is now XML.

I haven't checked it out yet, but hopefully it'll work for me tonight.

Last week we talked about how to modify the iTunes track arrows to point to the library instead of the music store. With the introduction of iTunes 8 yesterday, this hack no longer works (it will still work if you stick with iTunes 7.x). However, you can easily remove the iTunes store links entirely, if you prefer. Just open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE When you re-launch iTunes, the links will be gone. To get things back to normal, just replace "FALSE" with "TRUE." ___________________ Submited by : Descargar Libros

Thanks!

Now if someone smarter than I could figure out how to get rid of the Genre column from the itunes browser. Used to be an option in version 7.

You mean like this?

(Thanks for the inspiration to go digging again; I rarely use the browser, so I hadn't noticed that change.)

Thanks, but no thanks. Those "useless" arrows allow you to go directly to all of an artist's albums by option-clicking on the arrow next to an artist, or the full album by option-clicking the arrow next to the song title. It's a very useful feature, actually.

It sure is, for those who want it. That's why iTunes 7 had it right: it was an easy-to-use preference, controllable by the user without any trickery. There's no rationale explanation ("simplifying the interface" ... right...) for eliminating the preference. If they felt it cluttered stuff up, they should have just moved it into the Advanced tab.

I agree that those arrows are tops for navigation... and there's an older macosxhints article which makes it better,
by reversing the logic: i.e., (normal) click to jump around our library, and option-click to jump to the iTunes store!

Modify the iTunes 4.5 link arrows' behavior
defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES

I've written an app that will do the whole process for you - no need to futz around in Terminal and no fear of breaking everything for people new to messing around with their macs. Download it here

Spent at least 30 minutes searching within iTunes and Google for this and gave up.

And ofc the solution is here! :-)

Thanx!

@ Hal Itosis: Thanks for the tip! Works great. Now I only see the arrows when needed, and they do what I want, even if I'm holding a cup of coffee.

Um… After upgrading I don't see any arrow links. Do I need to do something special to turn them on?

The other workaround is to use Onyx, and this is an Old workaround that still works. Onyx has the ability to make the arrows ONLY point within your own library, and not to music store (ie: also enables Browser mode when clicking on arrows that No Longer go to itunes Store)

Onyx:
Parameters>Misc>Point the link arrows of iTunes on:"Library".

Quite useful for me

The defaults command to invert the arrow links so that they point to your Library rather than the store is:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES

Thank you. Now I have my 5 characters at the end of the song name of a selected song back. Setting auto-size actually makes everything fit, regardless if it is selected or not!

Hi Rob:

Is it possible to disable store links only on specified playlists? Say, if you were serving a playlist but didn't want the user to be able to purchase the tracks or visit the store for the songs in the particular playlist.

Thanks!
Jimmy L.
