How to search via contacts' nicknames on the iPhone iOS devices
While the nickname field of Address Book entries does sync to the iPhone, it's not searchable on the iPhone. Also, it's not used as the display name in call lists or SMS chats. I much prefer reading friend's short names or nicknames instead of their full name when they call.

The easy solution to achieve that is to turn your friends into companies. Use each person's nickname as the company name, and check the Company box in Address Book. The only downside to this solution is that now their full names are not searchable on the iPhone anymore.

Quite a simple and obvious hint, but maybe helpful for some nonetheless...

I should think the other, more important, downside is that now I have no idea who in my address book are companies and who are not.

While being an interesting approach to the problem, this really isn't a viable solution at all for anyone with genuine company contacts.

And what if I want to know what company my contacts work for? Or if they actually are a company? This is hardly a hint. This is how to ruin something that works okay. Why not just stick their nickname in one of the name fields if it's so important? In brackets after the surname?

A better idea is to add the nickname in with the firstname, so for example:
firstname: Tony Anthony
Lastname: Bloggs

That way both names will be searchable. You'll need to decide weather to list nickname first or second, depending what you want to sort by.

Or swap First and NickName fields completely aka First: Khai'l NickName: Khai to First: Khai Nickname: Khai'l

Though I agree that it would be nice to see a preference for colloquial name usage especially for the phone.

I just create a duplicate card in Address Book and change the name to the nickname. Then I place those entries in their own Group.

Search for only Co. or name? Why?
Authored by: Kimhill on Sep 04, '08 05:18:28PM

The iPhone can't search the company field if the entry is considered an individual. And it can't search the name fields if the entry is considered a company.

Is that brain-damaged, or what? I love my iPhone, but this is just crazy. I need to search all my fields, incl. "Note" -- but it should go without saying to AT LEAST search all names & companies.

It's ironic that Apple has the industry-leading Spotlight on the desktop -- but search on the iPhone is in the stone age.
