Watching video podcasts on the iPhone and iPod touch iOS devices
In the past, video podcasts were also available in the Music section of your iPhone or iPod touch, and you could listen to their content content as audio only.

Since version 2.0, you can access video podcasts from the Music menu, but you can view their video now. You can also view them in both portrait and landscape mode.

[kirkmc adds: In this earlier hint, we mentioned that you would only get the audio of video podcasts when playing them from the Podcast menu. It's up to you to determine if this new behavior is good or bad.]

You can get the old functionality (found this by accident)

1. Start the video podcast playing.

2. Lock the phone (which will stop playback)

3. Bring up the iPod controls without unlocking.

4. Press play and you'll be able to listen to the audio of a video podcast.

A bad thing, if you ask me. Down to one single choice from the two we had. It was supposed to be there to give the option of saving battery life. Why is that not a good idea anymore?

What's worst, selecting a video in the Music section and locking the screen stops the audio! In order to keep it playing you have to start it, lock the screen (which will force a stop), click the Home button to bring the screen back on, and double click the Home button again to tell it to frigging keep playing the audio even if the screen is off (and then lock it back).

How is having less a better feature?

(Note: playback will not stop if a video is part of a playlist and the screen was locked before its audio starts playing).

It's a step in the right direction to enable video display in the portrait mode (aka vertical orientation). But it's an imperfect implementation.

Right now, only video podcasts (accessed from the podcast screen, not the video screen) and music videos (accessed from the music screens, not the video screen) can display vertically.

Why not let ANY video play in portrait mode -- so long as you hold the device in that orientation?
