10.5: Exclude Downloads from Time Machine System 10.5
Time Machine automatically excludes hot folders like /var/tmp and /var/vm and Library/caches from its backups. But it does not exclude, by default, the Downloads folder.

If you are like me, things in your Downloads folder are mainly transient items that have not yet earned the status of permanent guests on your hard drive. So add this to your list of excluded items by using the Options button in the Time Machine System Preferences panel.

I invite readers to add comments suggesting other overlooked folders with lots of churn that should not be backed up by default.

The Desktop

As it acts as my downloads folder...
(Currently, I occasionally go through my Desktop folder in the TM interface and delete stuff from there. Excluding the Desktop folder would unfortunately also exclude two folders which reside there permanently.)

You could make the permanent items aliases and store the actual items in your Home folder. So that the items get backed up but the Desktop can be excluded.

Just drag holding Command & Alt to create an alias of the item.

.Trash f (If I put something there I want it deleted. Besides, I don't want my TimeMachine backup disk to be archiving every software download img or zip file in there which I haven't gotten around to emptying yet)

Movies f (They take up a lot of space, swap out frequently and aren't critical to me since the entire HDD is backed up periodically via SuperDuper to yet another drive. So I don't want 'em on my TM backup)

Podcasts f (They take up space but are easily replaceable)

This points to one of the things I'm a little frustrated at. Rental Movies go in the same folder as "my personal movies". I'm less worried about TM backups on that front, but it drives me nuts to have to individually exclude these from my mozy.com backups.

Definitely the podcasts folder. If you subscribe to many (or any video podcasts) then this folder is larger and has more turnover than you probably realize. They're also easily recoverable if you care enough to try.

I exclude my Ableton and Peak temporary folder and my Gmail IMAP folder (saves 5 gigs and it's all online too)

Gmail IMAP is an excellent suggestion. I'll mull it over because I once had my account stolen (I was able to get it back).

Best to all,
M.

I have my EyeTV Archive folder excluded since it tends to have similar churn, and instead copy those files over manually to a FW drive to backup.

~Library/Application Support can also be full of all kinds of huge folders, like the caches for Joost or Second Life.

Of course, this hint does not seem to apply to those using FileVault. The home FileVault folder is already excluded, but is backed up when the user logs out. All individual folders are greyed out in the listing of folders to exclude, probably because of the nature of the sparsebundle and that the TM software cannot see individual subfolders folders after logging out.

If your using DropBox exclude the home -> .dropbox -> cache folder (multi platform... but invisible folders in home is not good)...
Its still in beta and they haven't added a auto remove cache thing, so it gets huge!

I don't use Joost very often. But I found that, after Joost is used, there's about a 400MB file that get's changed and is backed up with time machine. I have excluded the following folder from back ups:

User > Library > Application Support > Joost > anthill.

The anthill cache is the large file that I'm not concerned with needing to back up.

MySQL Database Directory

I exclude the MySQL data directory since they can be quite large single blob files.

/usr/local/mysql/data/

Also, the Entourage database.

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database

Just wanted to point out, if you're not backing up your entourage database, your not backing up your email (if you're using entourage). All of your email is stored in that file.

Items with very short life are not saved in Time Machine.
Or at least, they don't stay very long time in Time Machine backups.
Please verify this info, anyway. And forgive my poor english...

I run one folder in my home folder called NoBackup

It's excluded from my rsync scripts and also from my TM backups.
so anytime i download something or want to put a big movie and take it with me or a heap of stuff i don't need backed up. (checkouts from source control of big projects) they go in there.

$HOME/Library/Mail/IMAP-<username>@imap.gmail.com/\[Gmail\]/All\ Mail.imapmbox

I add this to Spotlight's exclusion list as well.
