Make a Pandora (or any web page) into a program Web Browsers
I love using Pandora Radio, but always hated having a separate browser window open all the time. As a solution, I discovered the excellent (and free) Fluid.app, which will make a free-standing application out of a web-app -- and even better, can convert your app to a menu-bar extra!

I just opened Pandora, clicked on the 'mini-browser,' and then copied that address into Fluid.app. After creating the program, simply click on the Fluid menu choose Convert to MenuExtra SSB. You can even go to Preferences in your program (prior to converting) and select window styles and transparency.

So I now have a small menu extra with a pop-up semi-transparent window that I can instantly open and play/pause Pandora without keeping a separate browser-window open. Of course, Fluid can be used to make apps out of any other webpage as well. I hope others enjoy this as much as I am.

Mmh, you can do the same thing with the integrated functionality in Safari 4 (actually in a Developer Preview state), which is available at http://connect.apple.com (at least adc free membership is required: an appleID with adc activated). For me is pretty stable and faster, try it :)

Not mentioned in the hint: Fluid requires OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Quite true. Tiger users could use Prism - the Mozilla project of a similar nature, although I find Prism to be rather clunky in comparison.

I love my Pandora radio also and wanted to have it without a browser window open too. The easiest and nicest way I found was already available to me in Leopard. If you open Pandora in Safari, click File>Open in Dashboard click on the Pandora radio player, adjust the size to your liking then click add and you will have a nice little Pandora radio in your dashboard that plays your music in the background. The web clip widget will even let you add a nice frame around it and as far as I can tell the radio is fully functional. I can thumbs up/down songs and create new stations. Hope this helps somebody. I hate to download 3rd party software for things like this.

I'd be interested how you get this to work because I actually tried this prior to looking into Fluid.app and I found that the music would stop playing whenever I left Dashboard. Plus each time I opened Dashboard it would have to reload the player.

Specificially for Pandora, you can also look into PandoraBoy, which is an application that only does Pandora, but makes the remote usable for controlling it.

Quick question: is this, or can it be, Kerberized?

I'm thinking this, particularly the ability to make it into a Menu Extra, would be useful in conjunction with the web client for PCounter from A.N.D. Technologies.

I was able to get this to play music in the background: by clicking on the information "i" on the widget that's created, you'll flip the widget over. Then unclick "only play audio in Dashboard."

Yea, sorry about that. I did forget to mention to click the info (i) button on the widget and uncheck "only play audio in dashboard", this is also where you can add the frame around the widget. I have a screenshot of my Pandora widget at [link:]http://gallery.me.com/gailfoil#100088/Pandora-20Dash-20Widget&bgcolor=black Deut3221 glad you like the tip, thanks for the kind words. Interactive if you could give more information about the problem you're having I'd be glad to help you out. Make sure you're using Leopard, I think web clip widgets were new to Leopard.

First, I really appreciate this hint because I did not know anything about Fluid. It is indeed a great application.

Secondly, I tried Safari > File > Open in Dashboard, but it did NOT create a Widget at all. I don't know what to make of this. Any advice would be appreciated.
