Avoid an ID3 tag umlaut problem in iTunes 7.7 Apps
This week, I installed iTunes 7.7 so that I could remotely control iTunes with my iPod touch. After updating iTunes, every time I play a title that includes an umlaut (like ä, ü or ö), iTunes damages the ID3 tag, and I get "Die ƒrzte" instead of "Die Ärzte," for example.

I wanted to downgrade back to version 7.6.2, but it wasn't as easy as just copying the app from my PowerBook to my main Mac. Then I had the idea that it's possibly a matter of the ID3 tag version. When you select a track and open the track info, you can see the version of the ID3 tag. For me, most of my tracks had an ID3 Tag v2.2.

I selected all tracks and converted the ID3 tag (via the Advanced » Convert ID3 Tags menu item) to the latest version (2.4), and that did the trick! Now playing a title with umlauts doesn't damage the ID3 tag. I don't know what Apple did that causes iTunes to have a problem with umlauts -- nor do I know if I'll have to convert the ID3 tag version for all new tracks I import -- but maybe there's a bug fix in the near future. Until/unless this bug fix is released, though, I can now use iTunes as I'm used to.

I didn't have any problems with a song which had an Ö (capital O with umlaut) in the Artist field of an ID3 2.2 tag. iTunes played it just fine without corrupting the tag. This was on Intel 10.5.4.

What field and character did you have? What encoding? (Unicode? ISO-8859-x ?) PowerPC? Intel? OS X version?

Maybe the files weren't corrupted at all. (I don't think iTunes would rewrite files while playing them.) It sounds like the interpretation of the contents changed. Maybe iTunes previously auto-detected the encoding for 2.2 tags, and now it always uses ISO-8859-1, which is correct, because UTF-8 wasn't allowed until 2.4 if I remember correctly. So maybe the tags already were already broken?
Unfortunately the files are converted now, so forensic analysis is impossible. :)

It can't have been a 2.2 encoding issues, because my songs already were all id v2.4, but still suffered from this problem (Björk became Bj^rk, etc.)

By the way, they also profited fom the same solution: converting from 2.4 to 2.4 (sic) made the filenames stable again.

On a side note, since iTunes 7.7, some tracks mysteriously change their names from title to file name (i.e. iTunes shows "01_My_favorite_song" instead of just "My Favorite Song") but I believe this happened when iTunes updated the DB... I wonder if that's related...

I could not reproduce your problems with iTunes 7.7 on Mac OS 10.5.4 / PPC with Tracks / ID3 v.2.2 including Umlauts.

So this rather looks like a problem related to your computer or the encoding of your database.

Or a bug that has been reported by dozens of people on the apple support forums.

as far as I could see from glancing through the topic, only 10.4. seems to be affected. People with 10.5. don't seem to have this problem, maybe this should be added to the headline or the text...

Best,
auco

Nope, I'm on 10.5.4 (iTunes 7.7) and have that problem.
It seems to be happening on mp3 files only and not on Apple's Lossless...

I could reproduce the error. I'm on iTunes 7.7 (43) PPC on 10.4.11 with all updates installed.

I did have the same problem playing a Röyksopp song. It will only corrupt the song when played.
