Disable single-click URL selection in Firefox 3 Web Browsers
When the user single-clicks in the address bar in Firefox 3 (currently at RC1 -- download | end user features), the default behavior is to select the entire contents of the address bar. The expected behavior for most other OS X browsers, including Firefox 2, is to insert the cursor at the click location. To restore Firefox 3 to sanity:
  1. Type about:config in the Address Bar and press Enter.
  2. If you get a message warning you about changing advanced settings, click "I'll be careful, I promise."
  3. Locate the preference named browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll and double-click it to change its value to false.
That's it. Firefox should be back to it's old behavior. Note that you can still double-click the Address Bar to select a word, and triple-click to select the entire URL.

I may get hated on, but I love this functionality of clicking in the address bar and it automatically gets highlighted. In fact, does anyone know how to turn this functionality ON in Safari/WebKit?

Thanks

Connor

I'm with you. I hate have to triple-click or use Command-L to select the URL. I hope Firefox doesn't "fix" this, and Safari actually does the same in their next release.

You don't have to triple-click or use a keyboard shortcut. Just click the proxy icon (the icon immediately to the left of the URL text) and the whole URL will be selected. Such functionality gives "the best of both worlds": you can insert the cursor or select the whole URL each with a single mouse click.

Proxy icon behavior has changed in FF3
Authored by: dzurn on May 30, '08 12:32:15PM

Unfortunately, the behavior when clicking on the proxy icon has ALSO changed in FF3. Now a click shows an identity info popup for the website instead of selecting the location.

So now to type in a new URL I have to either hit Cmd-L or single-click on the location bar, instead of aiming for the proxy icon as in FF2.

Madness takes its toll.
Please have exact change.

In Safari, click the proxy icon (to the left of the url) to select all text.

I am not going to hate you. In fact I love this behavior of IE and FF3 so much (I rarely ever want to edit part of a URL, but rather replace 1 URL with an entirely different one), that I filed an enhancement request with Apple a while ago. Haven't heard a reaction yet.

You probably won't ever hear from Apple on that one as you can already select the URL with just one mouse click - click on the proxy icon next to the URL text. Ta-da!

Connor, I'm with you! I've had Firefox set up like this ever since I found out how to do it.

When I click in the address bar, I'm generally about to go somewhere new, so I prefer the content to be selected for immediate deletion.

Eddie

When I click in the URI bar, I rarely want to overtype everything, because I'm usually correcting someone else's error or trying to get to a home page. Currently:
  • first click: interpreted as single click: entire line selected
  • 2nd: double click: word
  • 3rd: triple click: entire line
  • 4th: quadruple click = 2 double clicks: word
  • 5th: pentuple click = 2 double clicks followed by single click: insert cursor without selection
So, to get the desired result with the current misbehaviour, I have to pentuple click. Now I can just single click.

Thank you!

Great tip...How about

arrow key behavior? When I am in the URL bar in Safari, down arrow takes me to the end of the line and up arrow takes me to the beginning. I like that behavior. Not hating on Firefox or anyone who likes it differently, but I wish Firefox had this as an option also. Is there any way to turn it on?
