Entourage 2008 sync email address labeled incorrectly Apps
The other day I was checking my Contacts list inside Entourage 2008 and saw that a lot of the email addresses were labeled incorrectly. I primarily enter my contact information from within Address Book and I let it sync with my Exchange server.

The problems:
  1. If you enter an email address in Address Book and label it as Work email, it will be resolved as "Other" type of email inside Entourage (Exchange).
  2. If you enter the email address from Entourage and label it as Work email, it will be resolved as "Home" type of email inside Address Book.
The solution:

Go into Address Book's Preferences and uncheck the check box next to Synchronize with Exchange. This will make Address Book to not upload the information into Exchange. Next, go into Entourage's Preferences » Sync Services, and check the box for Synchronize contacts with Address Book and .Mac. This will make Entourage do a pull of the data from either Address Book and .Mac.

This solution leads to another problem: My Exchange Address Book will not synch up unless I run Entourage. But this is one I can live with, since I care about the data inside my iPhone the most, and whenever I make changes, it is either inside my iPhone, Entourage, or from Address book where I have Entourage installed.

My experience has been that the sync option in Address Book does not do anything at all, and that the Entourage 2004 address book sync is in fact a two way sync and not just a pull to Entourage from Address Book as this hint indicates. I wish it was just a pull as I have problems of labels changing, addresses duplicating themselves, and data just going missing. Turning off the Entourage syncing stops all those problems. (I'm also syncing Address Book between 2 Macs, and an iPhone on the computer without Entourage. I connect to a 2007 Exchange server.)

In Entourage 2004 you can sync to your "on my computer" address book or your exchange account address book, but both will be syncs and not one way pulls as this indicates. The difference is that the exchange address book would get your info up to your OWA page, and the on my computer is, well, just that.

I've also found that address book syncing in 2008 is completely broken.

Perhaps what is causing these unwanted modifications of the labels is not the syncing process with Entourage, but the Entourage to Exchange sync that's happening. I'll try syncing with my Apple Address Book with the "on my computer" Entourage address book and see if I have problems. From experience I'd say it may take a week or two for those problems to appear. I'll follow up later.

If anyone knows a way to do a pull only from address book I'd like to hear about it.

Follow up to my reply: No problems so far syncing to the local Entourage contact list.

Also, I remembered that addresses with 2 lines for the "street" entry were the entries that sometimes were duplicated when I was syncing with exchange. It couldn't handle "street" entries formated like this:

123 Fake St
Apt 1A

I've been able to sync with Entourage 2008 and Apple AddressBook, though it appears that if the Apple ADBook has more than one email address entry for a contact, only one of addresses moves over. I haven't delved too deeply in this one, but I would imagine that there are a few other things that don't work either.

Thanks for the tip though.
Jason
