New poll on menu bar icons posted Site News
I just posted a new poll on menu bar icons. More specifically, how many programs do you keep installed on the right side of the main menu, including Spotlight? Count only those things that provide separate functionality, not just a count of visible things. If you show the weekday and the time, for instance, that's one, not two. If you use MenuMeters to put your Quad core machine's CPU usage in the menu bar, those four bars are one function, not four. (But if you also show MenuMeters' disk, network, or memory features, each of those count as separate functions.)

I was quite surprised by the total on my machine -- usually 19, sometimes 20 or 21 depending on what I'm doing. (Due to a 20-question poll limit, all answers above 18 are lumped together.)

If I have the Displays and Sound icons from System Preferences, does that count as +0, +1, or +2?

rob... don't these create problems?

I've read several places that menubar items are potential problems and I've personally found that sometimes I the 'SystemUIServer' becomes non-responsive in the Activity Monitor (which does a number on the entire OS sometimes) as a direct result of something in the menubar.

The fix is to trash the preference file so the menubar goes back to the default.

So I have taken to using almost only Apple menubar items (e.g. Displays; Audio; Bluetooth; etc.). The exception is MenuMeters which I find difficult living without.

Your 'take' on menubar items?

9 Items
Third-Party: Alarm Clock 2
Apple: Time Machine / Keychain (used to force Screensaver, used to use AS) / AppleScript / iChat / Keyboard Layout I use the character palette a lot & Japanese keyboard / Clock (widest item currently active "HH:MM") - Users - Spotlight

Same rule applies to my Dock: Bare minimum, if I don't use it within the week, it's out.
