Choose storage destination for iTunes' Convert feature Apps
You may have known that holding the Option key down before activating the Advanced menu in iTunes yields the 'Convert to [format]...' (where [format] is the audio format you've chosen in iTunes' Preferences) menu item, which is useful for selecting a file on your computer to convert to your preferred audio format and adding it to iTunes.

If in the Open dialog, however, you select your desired file(s) and then again hold Option before clicking the Open button, iTunes will immediately open another file dialog asking for the destination in which to place the converted file, regardless of music folder location preferences.

Note: The converted file is still added to the iTunes library. This hint just gives you control as to where the file will be saved in the Finder.

I never knew about that keyboard shortcut, probably because it is one of the few that doesn't change in real time (i.e. by pressing option after selecting the menu). Apple should change that inconsistency with the rest of the OS (try pressing option with a Finder menu active to see what I mean).

I can't get this to work. I tried holding option when clicking the "Open" button in the "Add to Library…" dialog; I also tried holding option key through both operations (add to library and open) and the song just gets added to my library as usual. This is on iTunes 7.6.2 and Leopard; were you using a different version?

Nevermind. I didn't realize I needed to use the "Convert to AAC…" command.

Neat.
