Access iPhone-only web pages with Safari Web Browsers
Many web sites now have pages especially formatted for the iPhone, enabled by detecting the "user agent" for the iPhone Safari browser. You can easily visit these pages with your desktop or laptop version of Safari.

First, enable the Develop menu (as indicated in the earlier hint; it used to be called the Debug menu). Then, from the new Develop menu, select User Agent » Mobile Safari x.x.x - iPhone. Try it on Google, for example, and you'll get the right-sized iPhone Google pages. Cool.

[robg adds: Most browsers include some method of setting the user agent, so you can view iPhone-only sites in pretty much any browser you want to use.]

This should work for simple sites, but I'm pretty sure there are CSS and javascript tricks to allow them to be iPhone only.

I think you can enable the Developer menu within Safari's preferences. You don't need to travel to the Terminal.

when I click the javascript it simply adds the suffix to the current window. so this only works in the google search window it self.

it would be nice to have an analgous one for "google this site" you click click for any currently visible web page

You can easily enable the develop menu in Safari in the Preferences. Just click on the advanced button and select the option at the bottom of the window.

Anyone know how to work things the other way around?

There are user-agent sniffers pointing iPhone users to pages with reduced functionality versions of some site, sometimes needlessly - can one spoof your user agent from within mobile Safari?
