10.5: Bind DejaMenu to a Mighty Mouse button Apps
One of my all-time-favorite OS X utilities is DejaMenu (a previous Pick of the Week winner). This free application shows you a program's menus (File, Edit, etc.) in a pop-up menu whenever you press a global key combo. In addition to running DejaMenu via the key combo, I also like to activate it via a spare button on my Apple Mighty Mouse -- that way, whether I'm using the keyboard or the mouse, I can get to a program's menus quickly.

Assigning DejaMenu to a Mighty Mouse button worked great up until 10.5, at which point something in the OS changed. When invoked via the mouse button in 10.5, all I would see was the DejaMenu configuration menu, but none of a program's menus -- the key combo itself, however, worked fine. After so many years of mouse-based DejaMenu use, I was having trouble adjusting to only activating it via the keyboard. (If you use a third-party mouse that allows you to assign key combos to buttons, you may not have this problem -- another Mac here with an Intellimouse works just fine when set up that way in 10.5.)

During a chat with Many Tricks' Peter Maurer, I was lamenting this lost functionality. A few hours later, basically unprompted, a tiny app called DMTrigger showed up in my inbox, courtesy of Peter. By assigning my mouse button to run the trigger application instead of DejaMenu itself, everything worked perfectly again!

Peter's given me permission to host and distribute DMTrigger here on macosxhints.com [32KB download]. However, before using DMTrigger, note that this program is not an official Many Tricks utility, it's completely unsupported, and if your Mac explodes into a smoking pile of aluminum and melted plastic after using it, well, that's just a sign that it was time to buy a new Mac anyway. In all seriousness, I've been using it for a couple months now, and haven't noticed any ill effects. Also note that Peter's not modifying DejaMenu in any way; he's just written a wrapper application that launches DejaMenu when the mouse button is pressed. So thanks to both Karl Hsu for DejaMenu, and to Peter Maurer for making it "buttonable" again in 10.5!

Works great with CornerClick so I can hover in the top left corner of my second monitor and get the menu options. Thanks.
