Hardware Monitor: Tons of system information Apps

If you like knowing everything about your Macs, or if you're trying to troubleshoot a problem you think may be related to heat, power, or fan speeds, then Hardware Monitor is a tool you should have in your toolbox. This program can display and track a ton of information, covering everything from temperature to fan speeds to heat to graphics processor utilization, CPU load, and much more. It can do this for local or remote machines, and display the data in a number of different formats.

I covered Hardware Monitor in detail in this recent Mac Gem, so I won't repeat myself too much here. Although there are lots of monitoring utilities out there, Hardware Monitor provides more data than anything else I've run across, especially on Intel Macs with its optional X86 driver installed. You can also see some general system information, such as your machine's build date (week of 10/13/2006 for my Mac Pro) and its cache, memory, and CPU details. While there are free apps to just monitor temperatures (including Marcel's own free Temperature Monitor), Hardware Monitor offers a look at other items within your machine that may be causing issues (or that you just want to use to display pretty graphs!).

I have found that http://iSlayer.com have a really good widget (iStat pro) or menu bar utility (iStat menus) as an alternative (freeware)
