Transfer a Remote Desktop 3.2 setup from Mac to Mac Network
If you've ever wanted to copy an Apple Remote Desktop setup from one machine to another, you need to move a number of files. Open Terminal, and run the following commands -- modify the username and machinename settings as necessary for your environment. Note that the lines that start with ### are explanatory; don't type those... Note that this should preserve passwords as well. This Apple article was used to come up with this solution.

I had to do one of this kinds transfer a few days ago but interestingly I didn't have to copy these files/folders.

I was in the process of transferring data from one computer to another. The stuff I copied were everything from Desktop, Documents, Library in the home folder. After the transfer, everything works including ARD 3.2 (-- of course the app need to be installed on the new computer). All computer records (6 servers, 35 workstations) and the passwords to connect them are kept. I don't which files/folders to hold these records but I definitely didn't copy any files from /var folder of the old Mac.

Presets you might have created (I have a ton of them) are located in ~/Library/Application Support/Remote Desktop/Presets

Move them over to a new computer to save them as well. Matter of fact, that folder also contains the history, server tasks etc...

Transfer a Remote Desktop 3.2 setup from Mac to Mac

I've transferred my installation from my old PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook Pro, following these instructions, but I get a dialog box asking for the Remote Desktop password. And when I enter the same Remote Desktop password which was set on my old computer (and still works) it says that it's incorrect.

I could press the "I forgot" button, but then all the saved passwords will be erased, which I'd prefer not to do.

Can anyone else confirm that this hint doesn't always work? Or rather, come up with a new hint that does...

It didn't work for me either, I had the same problem with the password. I am surprised, because I have done this before and it has worked. The only difference I can see in my past attempts and this one is that this was from my G5 tower to my new Intel iMac - perhaps the different architecture?

I just had to do this, and found that the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist also had to be sent.
