10.5: Fix the transparent menu bar toggle in 10.5.2 System 10.5
If, after installing 10.5.2, you do not have the option to disable the translucent menu in the Desktop & ScreenSaver System Preferences panel, chances are you might have used this previous hint to disable the translucent menu bar.

Taking a hint from that particular hint... reset the value that was set by running this command: Logout and reboot, and the option will appear again.

[robg adds: I had the option in the Desktop panel, but it simply didn't seem to do anything. Running the above Terminal command fixed the problem.]

It's probably even more correct to remove the "EnvironmentVariables" key completely, thereby resetting the plist file to the state in which it shipped.

How would you go about returning it to its original state? I've tried the hint and it's not working.

I'd still love to turn off translucency completely for both the menu bar and for the menu drop downs.

Tried it; just exactly what am I supposed to see in the Desktop & ScreenSaver Preference Pane?

There's no Transparent Menu Bar toggle anywhere - in any Preference Pane! - that I can find.

Useless "hint" as far as I can see...and I'm open to any and all assistance on this.

17" PB G4, 1 GHz, 2GB of RAM

I don't see a toggle box in system preferences to disable menu transparency. I don't know if this is a situation where my machine simply won't support the feature in the first place, or what, but I just don't see the box.

Looking at the Macworld article discussing the ability to turn off transparency, I certainly never had a menu bar that was as transparent as the screen shot. However, I do have a slight transparent effect in the drop down menus themselves.

Thoughts?

Being one of three people in the world who loved transparent menus, the closest to the "old" Leopard that I got is by completely removing "EnvironmentVariables" key from this hint.
sudo defaults delete /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables'
It's not like original Leopard, but it's closer than what I had with upgrade to 10.5.2 (that is none). If anyone has an idea how to make menu bar as transparent as it was in 10.5.1, help us three out ;-).

I have a PB 12" 1.5 1.25GB of RAM, and I've also never had a transparent menu bar. I have a MacBook C2D and my menu bar is indeed transparent. Is the transparent menu bar for Intels only (possibly G5's as well)?

The option for controlling the transparent menu bar is located in the ScreenSaver/DeskTop Preference pane (in the desktop pane).

Can somebody remind me why everybody hates the translucent menus? I honestly don't see why it's such a big deal. That and the rounded corners. Really? I mean, Really?

If you have older hardware, the menubar transparency checkbox (which is at the bottom of the Desktop part of the Desktop & Screensaver preference pane) will not appear because your computer doesn't support menubar transparency. Apple doesn't show you the option if you can't make use of it.

For example, my Intel Core Duo iMac does support transparency, but my iBook G4 doesn't.

Here's what Apple said about transparency and video hardware shortly after Leopard was released:

Thanks for the information. I figured that was the answer to my apparent lack of a translucent menu bar. I suppose I can add that to the ever growing list of reasons it is time to upgrade my PB.

I'd put the non-transparent menu bar fix in, setting it to 0.62 as per the comments in the previous hint, and I still had the checkbox appear for me. Toggling the checkbox resulted in the menu bar going from lighter grey to darker grey and back again.

Anyway, to undo the manual plist setting from the previous hint, enter the following in the Terminal:

sudo defaults delete /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables'

Make sure that you have the 'EnvironmentVariables' bit there, as if you don't, you'll delete the entire plist file, leading to who-knows-what being wrong with your computer.

Oh, and you'll have to restart the windowserver after applying the defaults delete command above - most easily accomplished by rebooting...

Interestingly, none of these hints actually fix the "no option" problem for me, and I had not used any "hacks" to disable transparency in the first place, opting for the safer "21 pixel bar" placed on the top of my desktop pictures...

The option to control this simply does not appear where it should.

I'm having the same problem; there is simply no checkbox in the Desktop preferences at all. This is the case both before and after running the command in this article.

And I don't have an old Mac either; I'm running a Mac Pro. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the fact that I'm running two monitors each on individual graphics cards? Anyone have a similar setup?

Yup, I'm on a Quad G5 with a GeForce 7800GT and the stock 6600, running three monitors, and I'm not seeing that checkbox either.

I'm with Panjandrum. I've tried the hints, but the toggle refuses to show up for me. I have a G4 iBook, the transparent menu bar and menus display as they should in 10.5, that is, the video is capable. The toggle is simply not there!

I really wish these clowns would have left the item in the prefs, grayed out if it's not applicable.

I HATE when you can't tell whether something is possible but not available. Just like having menu items disappear when you're in the wrong mode.

Gee, how about graying it and adding the text "not available with this hardware?"

I didn't apply the hack and this option still didn't show up for me. So far i've seen it work on macbooks, macbook pro's, and imacs. I've seen this fail on 3 Mac Pro's. For those that didn't apply the hack and didn't have the transparency option show up. What kind of mac are you using?

Never applied the hack and don't see the option. I'm on a very new MacPro Dual Quad 2.8. I did not transfer much over from my previous system, so that's not a factor in my case at least.

This hint is INCORRECT
Authored by: n8gray on Feb 14, '08 01:17:09PM
The command given in this hint does NOT undo the effects of the previous hint. It just changes the opaque menu bar from white to grey. To undo the previous hack you need to DELETE the EnvironmentVariables key from the plist file, not change the value stored in it. There's another comment listed here that describes how to delete the key, but I had a 'gotcha' with the procedure. In my experience, the 'defaults delete ...' command changed the permissions of the plist file so that only root can read it. That's probably not a problem but it can cause confusion. To reset the file and keep the proper permissions, these are the commands (should be two lines):
sudo defaults delete /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables'
sudo chmod 644 /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer.plist

This still doesn't fix my menu bar; when I select translucent, the menubar gets slightly darker.

Any other ideas?

Same here..I have two cards..the factory GeForce4 MX AGP and Radeon 9200 PCI on a Quicksilver 2002 Dual. Although there were no checkbox option b4 the upgrade, I DID have the translucency. Now after the uppy, it's solid....ugh. I may pull the card out and see what happens.
