10.5: Print selected pages from Preview System 10.5
To print any series of pages from Preview, open the sidebar and select the pages while holding down the Command key to select non-contiguous pages. (Hold down the Shift key to select contiguous pages.)

Once you have your pages selected, press Command-P to print. Note that you have to select more than one page in order to do this -- selecting a single page reverts back to printing an entire document.

"selecting a single page reverts back to printing an entire document"

Don't have a 10.5 box handy to test this, but it seems intuitive that you *could* print a single page by selecting any two pages and then choosing only one of them in the Print dialog. Yes?

"selecting a single page reverts back to printing an entire document"

I'm wondering what the great thought was behind THAT behavior. It's possible to have NO pages selected -- why couldn't that have meant "print entire document"?

I tried the hint to just print one page. This didn't work, but by selecting two pages and saving as pdf in the print dialog worked!

This was accomplished by opening the newly saved two page pdf with Preview and deleting the extra unwanted page (a edit menu item). This left a one page document for printing. Now I can use this to eliminate all the extra pages I didn't want printed.

I think if you first set up a Desktop Printer alias then you can drag a single page to that?

Well, the idea here, I think, is to be able to print selected pages AFTER going to the print dialog from any Application and choosing Preview. This opens Preview, and there's your web page or whatever, with "Print" and Cancel" buttons at the bottom. Previously, the only way we knew to print selective pages from Print Preview was to cancel and then print again, choosing "from ___ to____", which only printed successive pages.

I tried the method in this hint, and it worked, but most of the time I need to select just one page from a Google Maps printout. So this hint didn't work for my purposes. But then I got the idea to select all the pages I DON'T want to print, and hit delete. Viola! I click print and get my single page.

If that's not the point of this hint, let me know and I'll submit another.

This is ridiculous. Preview and command-select pages just to print a set of non-continuous pages? Apple needs to implement a page range field in its print dialog box like Microsoft Word has. How much easier would it be to just type, for example, "1,5-7,9" instead of doing three print jobs or this command-select thing?

No insult to the hint itself, just ranting about Apple.

I like this hint better than the M$ version. Who can remember all the page numbers you want to print, especially if you have TOC's, Roman page numbering etc. when the page count is not the same as the page number?

Isn't selecting pages by viewing thumbnails what a GUI is all about? iPhoto works the same except the menu doesn't change to "Print Selected Pages".

This excellent hint is a variation of the "Printing more than one mage" topic in the Preview Help file (in fact it's the ONLY printing topic in Preview Help), so you have to wonder why Apple didn't highlight it.

I have the same problem and did not find a solution yet.

I am a recent pc to mac convert, and so far I do not regret my decision. However, there are a few things which are really annoying on the mac side. While trying to find solutions for the little annoyances I encountered so far, I realized that it is quite common on mac forums that when people trying to find a solution for some problem with their mac, there is always a tendency of people defending the mac status quo ("that is by design!") instead of acknowledging that there is a problem. In forums on pc problems, people usually just take the problem at face value and don't question the intentions of the orignal poster.

When asking if its possible to not send the mabook to sleep when closing the lid, which is possible in Windows, people answer that this is not allowed by design because nobody would like to do so. Well, people apparently ask for it, so they seem to have a pretty good idea what this might be useful to. For example, they don't want to have the screen on while some computations are running. Come to the Mac side of life and find out why the 2009 is like 1984, I would say...

The same here. Selecting the pages by hand is in many situations not a good solution, because (i) for a large selection you easily lose the selection by a single missclick, (2) you can't save the selection as text string for reuse or for other people (3) you can't tell or write in an email to people which specific pages to print.

That said, I dont want to insult anybody, but just critic the general way of how to deal with missing functionality in mac forums. And also thanks for the workaround (selecting by hand) which is better than nothing!
