10.5: Use SSL in iChat to potentially avoid blockages Apps
Some offices and schools block iChat. One possible way to fix that problem is by enabling SSL connections in iChat. Go to Prefrences » Accounts » Server Settings, and check the Use SSL box.

Note: You must be offline in order to change this setting.

[robg adds: I don't have any way to test whether this works or not.]

Usually I just set the server to "80" instead of "5190" and it always works for the different schools I go to.

Gmail alternative

An alternative I found works well is to use the chat available with gmail. Sure, you can only chat with other gmail account holders or AIM accounts, but it uses port 80 to send and receive everything.

Even better, if you use the secure side of gmail (https://mail.google.com/), then your chat session not only uses port 80, but it is also encrypted. With this, there is no possibility of anyone on your LAN snooping your chats.

This worked for me too. I was fooling around one day and it actually let me login. I am behind a very strict firewall out here in Afghanistan. Great tip!
