The new iTunes Store movie rental program looks like it'll be a winner -- combined with the revised Apple TV, I can see my wife and I watching many more movies (though the 24-hour limit
poses some problems for us). In my first visit to the new rental store, though, it became obvious it's still a work in progress. For instance, there's no way that I can see to view all the available rentals. Instead, you have to look through all the movies, and find those that are available for rent.
Another issue, and the subject of this hint, is that you can't just drag a movie's entry to a playlist -- as you can with a song -- to create a list of "Want to Rent" movies. Hopefully a "wish list" feature is coming soon to the store, but until it does, here's a workaround. Just go to the screen of the movie you'd like to rent, then drag the movie's title from the header...
...into a "To Rent" folder in the Finder. The folder can be in your sidebar or toolbar, but not in your Dock (at least, I couldn't make it work when dragging into a folder in the Dock). If you want to get really fancy, you can then use Shift-Command-Control-4 to drag a region of the movie's information panel in the Store, and paste it onto the stored file as a custom icon (in the Get Info window). If you did, the end result would look
something like this.
What you've created is a folder full of webloc files (double-clickable URLs, basically). When clicked, your browser will open and then forward you to that movie in the iTunes Store. It's not an ideal solution, but until we have a Wish List capability, it's a decent workaround.
