10.5: View Trash via spring-loaded Dock System 10.5
To see the contents of the trash prior to dropping something on it, just do this: drag files onto the Trash icon in the dock and hold them over the icon for a few seconds. A new window will open in the Finder, displaying the current contents of the trash.

That is - of course - valid as long as the user has "Spring-loaded folders and windows" enabled in the Finder's preferences... There one can also set how few seconds is needed before the window opens.

And you can tap the space bar while hovering (click-and-drag) an icon over the Wastepaper Basket.

That will cancel your spring loaded pre-set waiting time and open the window immediately.
