Vote for your favorite Leopard hint! Site News
The short version: Iowa's not the only place where the polls open today. The polling booth is now open in the Leopard Best Hints contest! Cast your votes for your favorite 10.5 hints...

The longer version: As you're all hopefully aware, for the last 75 days or so, we've been running a Best Leopard Hints contest. Since the contest closed just over a week ago, I've spent a considerable amount of time narrowing down the 408 10.5 hints (that were published before the deadline) to a list of 20 finalists. This was a very hard thing to do, and I enlisted help from other Macworld employees to make some of the decisions. Still, many worthy hints wound up not making the list of finalists -- there were probably over 100 hints that I felt were worthy of inclusion, but there was only room for 20 finalists.

You may also note that some of your favorite hints didn't make the cut -- in particular, getting rid of the translucent menu bar isn't among the finalists. That's because I wrote up the hint, and despite my pleadings, Macworld won't let me enter the contest. More importantly, that hint simply referenced something published elsewhere, which was also an exclusionary condition in the rules.

So now it's your turn to help pick the winners from the list of finalists. How, you might ask? Just complete this survey, applying a rating from 1 to 10 for each hint (1 is a low score, the "worst of the best," and 10 is a high score, the "best of the best"). You do not have to rate every hint; if you're not comfortable rating a given hint, just skip it and move on to the next. One vote per person, please, and yes, we have ways of tracking these things :). The public votes will be combined with those of the Macworld staff to determine the 10 winners.

Voting will be open until next Friday, January 11th. We'll then tally the results from the public voting, combine them with the Macworld staff results, and announce the winners sometime during Macworld Expo the following week (we need to be able to contact each winner first, so the timing will be a bit flexible).

Thanks to everyone who submitted entries, and thanks to the queue review team who helped me get through the large submissions queue -- we had well over 1,000 submissions in the first 75 days of Leopard's release (for the curious, about 43% of submissions were published, 36% were duplicates, and 21% were rejected).

Maybe it's just me, but none of those 20 do anything for me.

Same here. I remember some much better hints. Some of these top twenty are pretty lamo.
