Use an unsupported Epson scanner on an Intel Mac Scanners
This hint describes how to modify the EPSON Scanner file to support older Epson scanners. Unfortunately, the process did not work for us with an Epson Stylus 2500 on an intel iMac running OS X 10.4.11.

The solution we found was to replace the Universal version of EPSON Scanner.app on the iMac (version 3.1.1) with the PowerPC version (version 3.1.0) from a G4 mac running OS X 10.4.11. We then modified the plist files as described in the original hint, and were able to scan with the Stylus 2500 using Image Capture.

[robg adds: Note that this change will have the scanner running in Rosetta mode on the Intel-powered machine. As with any change to a system file, I would recommend keeping a backup of the original, and you're on your own if this causes problems with your machine.]

Another viable alternative would be to use the (Universal software) TWAIN SANE Interface for Mac OS X:

... which has recently been updated to also support OS X 10.5.x Leopard.

This avoids replacing system components, BTW.

(Personally, I've used this for a long time with my Epson Stylus Scan 2000.)

Why not simply check the "Run in Rosetta" checkbox in the info dialog of the application? This is also the workaround to run PPC browser plugins in Camino of Firefox.

We tried that, but the scanner was still not recognized. I'm guessing there is something about the new version of the EPSON Scanner file (3.1.1 vs 3.1.0) that prevents the modifications from working, at least with the Stylus 2500 and iMac we were using.

Try using Vuescan. It is available at <http://www.hamrick.com/>;

It supports many scanners, and is usually better than the original software that came with the scanner.

Can anyone get back to me about why my scanner won't work anymore; whenever I try to use my scanner Epson CX6400, Image Capture doesn't seem to recognize it. It use to work, but not anymore. What are my options. I no longer have the software for Epson or driver, and it seems I don't see Epson CX6400 listed in my system profiler for USB.
