Solve the Safari HotMail login loop problem Web Browsers
For quite a few months, many Mac Safari users have been having problems with HotMail. The problem is that when they try to log in to HotMail, Microsoft's redirect commands wind up in an unending loop. This only happens when users did not manually click the link to "sign out" on their last session.

I've had to help many people solve this problem, so I thought it might be useful information for macosxhints.com. The way to solve the problem is to delete related cookies:
  1. In Safari, go to Preferences » Security » Show Cookies.
  2. Type in live.com
  3. Click the Remove All button.
Now you can login to HotMail again. In the future, manually sign out each time to avoid doing these steps again. The only real disadvantage is that you'll have to retype your username and password the next time you log in after clearing the cookies.

[robg adds: A comment on the queue site notes that this should also help fix looping issues with Yahoo's websites. I'm not a user of either HotMail or Yahoo (and Safari isn't my main browser), so I can't say I've experienced any of these issues. If you have, and this hint helps, please note it in the comments.]

Thank you, I've known for a while that deleting cookies worked but didn't realize logging out preemptively prevents it.

If you have the "debug" menu enabled in Safari, you can change the client to Firefox and it will work.

I don't use Hotmail on a regular basis, checking it maybe once or twice a week (old account...), and honestly, I don't recall ever having this problem. Hmmm.

All you have to do is go to http://my.msn.com and click the sign out button at the top prior to loading hotmail.com.

Hotmail is so pathetically mismanaged in so many ways I recommend that you get a gmail.com account which supports IMAP. That means you can check your e-mail from multiple clients like Apple Mail on your laptop, desktop, and have it in sync with the gmail web interface.

Better still would be to get your own domain name and run your own mail server. Nobody will touch you then!

To make it even easier, you can drag the Sign Out button at http://my.msn.com directly to your Safari bookmarks toolbar.

Now, all you have to do is press that button on your bookmarks toolbar to sign out of hotmail.

Long live Gmail, Yahoo mail, and Apple's new http://www.me.com.
