10.5: Disable the filename extension change warning Desktop
This is not really a hint, but I think it's worth mentioning. The Finder preferences in 10.5 (Finder » Preferences) allow you to turn off the annoying dialog box that normally pops up when you change the extension of a filename. You'll find the setting on the Advanced tab.

[robg adds: The other new addition there is a checkbox to always securely empty the trash.]

I just noticed in Leopard, when you click on a file in the Finder and press Return to edit it's filename, Leopard only highlights the main part of the name, not the extension.

I've been pining for this since Window's 95 and Mac OS X's support of filename extensions only brought the problem over to the Mac. Now I can rest easily at night.

By "deleting" the file extension you actually only hide it (that is unless you have set your account to always display the extensions). Do a command-I (get info) and you will see that the "true" filename still has the extension on it.
I personally think the extensions are ugly and do not add any information that is not already contained in the icon. They add 4 extra characters to the end of a name which can be cumbersome in column view. This said, I am actually looking for a way to revert to the old behavior that highlights the entire filename when renaming.

True from one point of view, but realize that the extension is often what determines the icon! For apps that do not save documents with type and creator codes, it's all up to the extension.

But I think the icon is retained even if you delete the extension.

Note that trying to delete a file's extension by simply renaming it in the Finder doesn't actually remove the extension, but only hides it. You can prove this with Get Info.

Aha, so that's why emptying the trash was taking so long. Thanks.
