10.5: Choose outgoing server per message in Mail Apps
Leopard's Mail now has a feature that lets you choose any one of your configured outgoing mail servers as you compose each message, which is particularly handy for laptops that connect to different Internet service providers.

To enable this handy feature, in Mail choose File » New Message. In the New Message composer, just below and to the left of the Subject: field, there's a customize button that displays a drop-down menu. Click the button, then choose Customize from the drop-down. You can then choose any or all of several optional controls that will be displayed on all New Message windows. In addition to displaying the Cc: and Bcc: and Reply-to: fields, you can now choose to show a drop-down listing the available outgoing mail servers, and another lets you set the message priority.

I can't verify the server one, but you have always been able to switch servers via the "From:" property (I used it in 10.4 extensively), and the priority one was available in 10.4 too.

This hint refers to the fact that you can specify which SMTP server you will use without changing your FROM (return address) account. You only see the server drop-down if you did not check the "Use only this server" box when configuring your outgoing mail (SMTP) server in the Mail.app preferences.

This is not new. I used this in Tiger, perhaps even in Panther.

Submitter here. I must've absent-mindedly clicked Leopard during submission. No this isn't Leopard specific. Still, it was certainly new to me, and not here on the site. It's in the Help files, but sans application.

The problem is that the message is still identified as coming from sender@mac.com rather than sender@chosen-smtp-server-domain.com

I have multiple business accounts and (rather like Don McAllister at Screencastsonline.com) I wanted to use the .Mac IMAP goodness (& Gmail's IMAP goodness, lately) to aggregate and archive all my mail for incoming work.

But then to be able to choose from which identity I sent mail using the smtp server and the account. But, given that Mail will always seem to send from .mac (or your primary server) even when using the tip in this hint it isn't possible without setting up multiple complete mail accounts rather than just smtp servers for the other identities and then having to make sure they do not ever receive.

Apparently Thunderbird can handle this so please, Apple, pretty please...

No, really. This is a healthy obsession.

You can partially address this by putting a comma and then a different email address in the Email field in Preferences -> Accounts. When you compose an email you'll be able to choose either of the email addresses from a drop down menu.

You can't change the From name with this method, though.

This also appears if you uncheck the "use only this server" box when setting up accounts, and you have multiple outgoing servers defined.

I never noticed this before, and it's valuable to me. I never knew how to set the damn priority without going to a menu before.

Just because it's not new to everyone doesn't make it a great hint!

I agree with ulfda. I live in Okinawa, Japan and was previously unable to send e-mails using my .Mac and Yahoo accounts due to some restriction that prevented SMTP access outside the US if that was where your account was created.

I used this hint at allforces.com to get a fix for the problem. Now I use Gmail to send all of my e-mails. This has worked for me with Apple Mail, MS Entourage, and Thunderbird. I have used this since before upgrading to Leopard, as when I used Apple Mail I would always be able to choose my SMTP server before I sent e-mail.
