10.5: A useless hint to create infinitely mirrored screens Network
First, this is just for fun, and has no practical use at all. Second, see the warning below before trying this...

Everyone knows the old fairground trick of infinite mirrors, where opposing mirrors give an image repeating itself into infinity. This was also replicated famously in Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video. Well, try this...from Mac #1, connect to Mac #2 using screen sharing in the Finder (not iChat). From within the screen sharing window, connect Mac #2 to Mac #1, again using screen sharing. Stand back and wonder what you can use this for!

Warning: I had trouble getting out of this mode once in it. To do so, I put Mac #1 into sleep mode (press and hold the power button), and as soon as I woke it again, was able to quit screen sharing. YVMV, and I have no idea what effect different window sizings or options may have. Fun for the child within though :)

In reality I think this is actually a bug, or at least an oversight by Apple. With my sensible head on, the app should warn you and/or make this impossible.

We found yesterday that if you have screen sharing open to a machine #1 from machine #2, jump out to spaces (F8) and connect to machine #1 from machine #3, you can actually control the mouse of machine #2 while in spaces.

I think we'll be submitting a bug report... ;)

That was one of the more amusing things I came across as an Apple Certified Trainer.

I was running a Server Essentials course when one of the students managed to make that happen between 2 instances of ARD running in fullscreen mode.

They solved the problem somewhat less elegantly by... pulling the power plug.

The best part wasn't the weird effect it produces, it was the concentration on the person's face as they tried to work it out. You could almost see their eyeballs turning in on themselves!

This is a pretty common trick with any screen sharing system. Even in the case where the program prevents you from immediately connecting back, you can use a third machine as a middle man, and by connecting 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 1 get the same effect. In general, none of the machines there have enough context to know about the loop, so they can't prevent it.

Had this happen by accident with my iMac G5 and MacBook Pro. Made both crash pretty hard, I had to hold down the power button on both.

I just tried this hint for the heck of it. To get out all I did was press the command, option, and escape keys. This brought up the "force quite application" window.

Such a feedback loop will create a torrent of data, of exponentially growing size, being sent back and forth until it saturates the network (and guess what happens when the OS pushes further).

No wonder it locks up the machines!

I tried this once with Timbuktu Pro. Same result. :)

If you try this, be ready to kill the screen sharing app *quickly*.

Hmmmm - Good try... but this bug was reported to Apple about 4 months ago during my beta testing. ;) I even captured a screen shot of the diminishing windows. ;)
