10.5: Leopard, Spotlight, and sparse disk images System 10.5
After moving some .sparseimages I created in Tiger to Leopard, upon mounting them, I noticed that Spotlight was not finding items that I knew existed on them. After turning off and re-enabling indexing for the volumes via Terminal several times with no luck, (and yes, I did wait long enough for Spotlight to finish the indexing process), I realized that if I created a new folder on the .sparseimage, it would show up in a search. However, none of the pre-existing files/folders would be found.

Then I tried renaming one of the pre-existing folders, and the new name showed up in a search. Then I renamed it back to the original name, and all was well. I also noticed that renaming only seems necessary for items on the top level of the disk, since any nested items I searched for started showing up in Spotlight after renaming the top folder.

[robg adds: I can't confirm this one, but if true, it seems like a bug. If anyone can test, please comment.]

This is the troubling behavior I found in Tiger's spotlight. Only new/touched items would show in the results even after completely wiping out the index and having it rebuild. I had a bug filed with Apple which they closed and said it was fixed in Leopard.
Here's the big problem... we have a user that uses search results to find if we've recently shot a product or not. When it comes up with false negatives, we shoot products (which costs money) that we already have shots for.
We are using EasyFind for now, and I haven't been working with/testing Leopard full-time yet, so I don't know if the problem still exists for us. This is troubling to hear...

I don't know if this will help, but try using a Sparse Bundle (new in Leopard) instead of a Sparse Image

not sure about the Sparse Images thing - but pretty much in any iteration of OS X I notice regularly that - pre-Leopard I could use Spotlight OR the Finder Search and something sitting on the Desktop would not show up in the Results_

Also in Leopard this continues to be an issue_
