10.5: Use Address Book nicknames in iChat Apps
Address Book has had a field to store a nickname since I don't know when (use Card -> Add Field -> Nickname to add the field to a card you're editing), but in Leopard, you can finally actually put that field to good use. First, as noted in this hint, Mail will now recognize and use the nickname field.

Second, In iChat, select View » Buddy Names » Use Short Names, and iChat will use the nicknames in the Buddy List. (Note that if you do this and you're storing iChat transcripts, the transcripts are stored according to the name listed in the buddy list window.)

This sounds excellent. For years I've been keeping separate entries in Address Book for my chat friends for this very purpose. Now I can put them back together.

For those not wanting to come up with nicknames you also can type just the first character of a recepient (eg J for John) followed by a <space> and then the first character of this person's last name (eg D for Doe) which would give you a list of (eg) john.doe@....

I actually tried to do this before and mistakenly concluded it actually just put people's first names in the list. It turns out if there's no nickname, sometimes it will put the first name, and sometimes it will put the full name. Any idea how it decides which? I can't figure it out, or at least, not in 30 seconds...

p.s. (For those who have been waiting for this forever, Chax used to add this as an option.)
