10.5: Keep hard drive icons anywhere on the desktop Desktop
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. While not really a hit, it is a cool new addition to Leopard.

If you move a hard drive icon to a specific location on the desktop -- even on a second screen -- the Finder will leave it there, even after a reboot! This is something that has bugged me forever, and now it's been fixed.

I've noticed this behavior, but am not sure how to reverse it -- I'd like to return to the "old" behavior of the disk icons being placed at the first available spot in the top-right of the desktop, regardless of where they may have been moved to in the past. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also first thought, this is a bug. This new feauture can be ennoying when working with about 20 different servers in the company where only a few are mounted each day and every day in a different order... How to turn it off?

i think there is a desktop bug in leopard. first i noticed (and posted to macintouch) that my sandisk u3 card was no longer mounting the u3 partition along with the data partition. under tiger, both partitions would mount with one having a cd icon.

anyway, even though i've told finder not to display local hard drives on the desktop, my bootcamp partition will not go away. also, when recording blank cd's and dvd's their icons don't disappear when the disc is ejected.

perhaps somehow these two seemingly unrelated items are related?

Turning it off

It's not really turning it off, but I'm guessing if you go to view options for the desktop and choose arrange by kind, Leopard will keep your volumes neatly organized for you.

My servers (a Mac server and a Windows server) don't show up on the desktop--only disks connected directly to my Mac show up. The servers show up in the finder window side panel under "Shared" but not on the desktop. At first, I didn't like that but I have come to appreciate it especially since I have an icon in the dock anyway--less clutter on the desktop. I guess I could always drag an alias to the desktop but I don't want to!

Have a look in Finder preferences, under the General tab - the check box for show Connected servers on the desktop might be off

This is a bug, not a feature.

You don't have to drag the icon to a different location for it to stay where it was when it was last mounted. All you have to do is free up icon spaces before remounting the disk - the second time it will mount exactly where it was before, even if there are "higher-up" spaces available on the desktop.

And this is driving me nuts. Icons should appear at the first available spot on the desktop, just as it has worked for Every. Single. Mac. OS. since 1984.

At the very least, this functionality should be selectable.

It is a bug. Apparently, Finder isn't updating the .DS_Store file correctly and isn't getting the correct information from diskarbitration during restart. We're seeing this from users when booting with CCC clones, the first time.

I added following command to a login script:

defaults delete com.apple.finder FXDesktopVolumePositions
(use it on own risk)

This deletes the server icon positions everytime you log in to your account and the icons will appear in the good old order: At the next empty place...

Is there a way in Tiger to get this behaviour? I'm always bugged by the disk icons returning the where Apple wants them rather than where I want them, every time I log in. Its so Microsoft!

It's nice to hear that Leopard has fixed this anti-user behaviour, but I'm not going there for a while. If there's a way to get the disk icons to stay where I want them in Tiger, I'd love to know about it.
