10.5: Install a number of bundled screen savers System 10.5
You might know that some Screen Savers are built with Quartz Composer, included in the OSX Developer Tools (Retro.qtz and Security.qtz are famous examples). Less well known is that there are a bunch (80+) of Quartz Composer compositions living in the System folder that only need to be copied to another folder so they can be selected in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference panel in System Preferences.

If you would like to enjoy these Screen Savers when you are away from the Mac, just follow these steps:
  1. Quit System Preferences, if it is running.
  2. Copy the files you'd like to test from the folder /System/Library/Compositions into your user's Library/Screen Savers folder (create this if necessary). The system will copy automatically if you drag, as you don't have rights to modify the source folder. I've found that these files work quite well:
    • Defocus.qtz, Fall.qtz, Grid.qtz, Image Hose.qtz, Moving Shapes.qtz, Travelator.qtz, Wall.qtz
  3. Open System Preferences, select Desktop & Screen Saver, and scroll the left panel down and select the newly-added screen savers under Other.
Travelator is my personal favorite.

[robg adds: Make sure you check the Options button, as you can use it to tweak the settings on some of these savers, such as Travelator.]

Hm, most of these don't work on my MacBook. I wonder if those that don't work need the non-integrated graphics on pro and desktop Macs?

Calling these "bundled screensavers" is misleading - most of these are not in fact screensavers at all but rather parts to be used in Quartz Composer projects. The majority are simple images effects which require an the selection of an image (in options) and do not move, fade, or do anything else that would "save" a screen. Some are actually the effects used in Photo Booth, iChat A/V, and Address Book.

To give the hint a little credit it does suggest a few that work better as screen savers but it should be noted that just because Mac OS X's screen saver engine will "play" any quartz composer document doesn't mean that every quartz composer document is a screen saver.

Personally these are the ones that seemed worth copying to me: Stix, Travelator, and Wall but of course YMMV.

The only ones that worked for me were the ones in your list.

There are several .qtz files that are cool for screensavers in the Developer folder, including some in Examples/Quartz Composer/Compositions/Graphic Animations folder.

I was not able to find any of the above as I did not install and optional components. What is required to get these files? Developer Tools and Examples or?

If you want to preview some of the compositions in /Developer/Examples/Quartz Composer/Compositions you can simply open it in finder and use Quick Look to view them. However, this only works for compositions that do not require an image input.

An easier way to install these is to drag them into the screen saver preferences dialog box. To uninstall an effect that you don't like, control-click on it and choose "move to trash". It's a copy, so the original is still available.

Some of the effects are only usable as screen savers if you alter the options, so this is more flexible than the quick look preview.

Actually, the following all work as screen savers
  • Wall.qtz
  • Defocus.qtz
  • Fall.qtz
  • Floor.qtz
  • Grid.qtz
  • Image Hose.qtz
  • Kaleidescope.qtz
  • Moving Shapes.qtz
  • Stix.qtz
  • Travelator.qtz
Personal favourite is Stix. Dont forget to click the 'show clock' option - saves waking your Mac....

Hmmm, Stix is also listed in iTunes' menus as one of the built in visualizers. I wonder if the other compositions from this hint could be installed as iTunes visualizers as well....
